The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and Medical Genetics in the Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary and is accepting applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar in Medical Genomics.

The Tarailo-Graovac group is seeking a highly motivated post-doctoral research fellow to be part of an exciting area of deciphering genetic modifiers for rare human disorders using model organism and whole genome sequencing.

This position allows the candidate a unique opportunity to be exposed to multidisciplinary approach (human and model organism genomics; \'wet\' and \'dry\' lab approaches) and to contribute innovative research with a substantial direct translational potential (e.g. better diagnostic and prognostic approaches, and identification of
new treatment targets for rare disease patients).

This position offers the candidate opportunity to instruct and supervise technicians, mentor trainees and to develop and lead the individual research program in the Tarailo-Graovac group focused on modulators of rare disease genes.

This is a full-time grant funded position with the University of Calgary, Cumming School of Medicine.

Work Performed:

  • Providing supervision and mentorship to bioinformatics trainees
  • Keeping up-to-date with scientific advances (e.g. relevant literature review, scientific meetings)
  • Designing projects and experiments
  • Reviewing emerging technological advances (e.g. high throughput sequencing, *omics)
  • Compiling, analyzing and interpreting diverse sets of data (e.g. phenomics, genomics, transcriptomics, metabolomics)
  • Writing, study reports, manuscripts, reviews
  • Communicating results: conference presentations, collaborators nationally and internationally
  • Participating in the preparation of grant application packages and communication reports for funders
  • Performing applied genome analysis of high throughput sequencing data
  • Integrating phenotyping data with genomics/transcriptomics data
  • Validating bioinformatics discoveries experimentally (opportunity for hands-on experience)
  • Reporting to Dr. Tarailo-Graovac and the team on the progress during regular individual and lab meetings
Qualifications:
  • PhD degree in Genome Sciences, Medical Genetics/Genomics, Bioinformatics or related disciplines within 3 years.
  • Extensive knowledge of genomics and genetics
  • Extensive knowledge of Unix, Linux, R, Python and/or related programming languages (e.g. Perl)
  • Experience with Cluster Computing
  • Experience working with animal models of disease (genomics)
  • Experience in molecular genetics will be considered and asset
