Main Purpose and Function

The Planning Assistant III position is responsible for supporting operations, project planning and delivery within a department. The planning assistant will provide technical support, social research, and analysis contributing to priority work areas across the Social Policy and Projects. These positions are supported by teams with expertise across Social Policy and Projects areas of focus.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  • Data analysis, mapping and reporting of key data;
  • Support partnerships with internal and external stakeholders;
  • Assist with developing presentations, memos, and council reports;
  • Event planning for both in-person and on-line meetings:
  • meeting organization including venue bookings and catering orders, recording of meeting minutes, and processing invoices;
  • Research on key project related initiatives in a municipal context;
  • Project management support;
  • Performs statistical survey and analyses tasks involving demographic, economic and sociological studies.
  • Performs skilled design and reproduction work relative to the preparation of reports and other presentations.
  • Liaises with a variety of internal and external contacts on matters related to the work.
  • Orders materials, maintains files and records.
  • Performs related technical planning work as required.
  • Working under the guidance of senior planners and collaboratively with teams across the Social Policy and Projects division of Arts, Culture and Community Services and other City departments;
  • Other duties/responsibilities as assigned
Qualifications

Education and Experience:
  • Completion of grade 12 supplemented by courses in social sciences and/or and statistics/analytical methodology, or an equivalent combination of training and experience and lived experience.
  • University degree in related field with experience similar to the specific duties/responsibilities of the position is considered to be an asset.
  • Knowledge of equity-related work within an intersectional approach with a focus on policy and practice is desirable.
  • Valuable skills and insights are gained from previous professional interactions with individuals with disabilities and/or personal experience in navigating life with a disability.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Able to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment, exercising sound professional techniques and judgement.
  • Demonstrated research skills and the ability to analyze and interpret population health data and work tactfully within established data-sharing relationships.
  • Ability to perform moderately difficult statistical survey and analysis work.
  • Demonstrated knowledge in policy areas related to equity (i.e. racial equity, economic exclusion, decolonization, gender-based frameworks) is an asset.
  • Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with a variety of external and internal stakeholders.
  • Experience working with diverse communities and strong local relationships is an asset.
  • Familiarity of social determinants of health frameworks is required.
  • Considerable skill in the graphical presentation of data.
  • Familiarity with graphic design and layout software such as Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Sound knowledge of the techniques and practices used in performing survey and statistical analyses work.
  • Strong skill set working with Microsoft Office including Word, PowerPoint, Excel are required.
  • Ability to pay attention to details.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as a part of a team.
Where operationally appropriate and subject to change, the City of Vancouver has a Flexible Work Program. This program allows staff to work remotely 1 \xe2\x80\x93 4 days a week from locations that are a daily commutable distance from their work at a City worksite. At this time this position is eligible to be part of the Flexible Work Program.

The City\xe2\x80\x99s COVID-19 vaccination policy is currently suspended and as a result, vaccination against COVID-19 is not required at this time. However, should circumstances change and the City deem it necessary to re-introduce such policy, you may be required to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 in order to be eligible to continue performing your duties.
