The Luminal Gastroenterology Practice Group of the Toronto General Hospital in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology of the University Health Network (UHN) consists of five luminal gastroenterologists providing clinical service to patients in the Toronto central area. TGH is a tertiary referral resource for the greater Toronto area and the province therefore serving Ontarians who need specialized programs. It provides clinical care to patients in the Toronto central area by providing a full range of gastrointestinal (GI) consultations as well as innovative diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy procedures, such as endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography and endoscopic ultrasound.
The Gastroenterology Clinical Program includes an urgent care and inpatient service for the Toronto General Hospital. The inpatient consultation team consists of an Gastroenterologist and up to three GI resident trainees. The team provides consultations to patients across all departments including Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine, Surgery, Oncology and Multi-Organ Transplant. The GI inpatient consultation service provides care to 20 to 30 actively admitted patients per day, with an average of 7 (range 4-12) new consultations per day. In addition, we will be expanding to the GI ambulatory service to include early post-discharge follow-up care and urgent outpatient consultations.
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Physician Assistant (PA) will be based at Toronto General Hospital, and function as an integral member of the luminal gastroenterology consultation team to provide patient care in a team setting. The PA will provide patient assessments, investigations, symptom management, and follow up care within the gastroenterology in-patient consultation service. Further, the PA will be coordinating and managing the early post-discharge follow up clinic and urgent out-patient consultation clinic. The PA will be offered training and educational opportunities both at orientation and also at an ongoing basis with staff physicians and our regular education programs. There are also opportunities for involvement in the teaching and research programs.
Principal responsibilities include utilizing theoretical knowledge and demonstrating an advanced level of clinical competence and excellence towards caring for patients followed by the Gastroenterology Inpatient Service. This includes collecting and interpreting data about the health of patients, symptom management, developing a medical diagnosis and formulating management plan in a team environment. The PA will play a vital role on the interprofessional team and may take on quality improvement, research and administrative responsibilities depending on their clinical commitment and performance. There will also be opportunities to participate in policy or clinical pathway development as well as education and professional development. The PA will interact with other team members including staff gastroenterology, other PAs, trainees (residents and fellows), nurses, and other clinical and allied health staff both within the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology in the University Health Network. The PA will perform other duties consistent with the job classification, as required.
