Job Description


The Physician Assistant (PA) will work under the direct supervision of an immediately available Attending Physician within a multidisciplinary team in an academic Cardiovascular Surgery Ward. The Physician Assistant will play a major role in facilitating consistent application of clinical protocols and continuity of care, and will also identify patients with acute clinical issues common to pre- and post-op Cardiac Surgical Patients and work within the multidisciplinary team to appropriately manage. The Physician Assistant will provide a full range of physician assistant services in accordance with privileges granted, request consultation or referral with appropriate physicians, clinics, or other health resources as indicated, order diagnostic tests as applicable, prescribe and dispense medications as delineated by the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committee

Qualifications * Graduate of Physician Assistant Program

2. Certification with the Physician Assistant Certification Council of Canada (PACCC)-
3. Recent minimum 2 years\xe2\x80\x99 experience (within the last 2 years) in a cardiovascular or critical care setting
4. Demonstrated skills in ECG, pacemaker rhythm interpretation/treatment, ABG interpretation, shock and adult code blue management
5. Possess or willing to develop skills for common post-operative cardiac surgical procedures
6. Critical practice orientation (CPO) certificate or equivalent (subject to testing)
7. Demonstrated ability to utilize problem-solving and critical thinking techniques effectively in an acute cardiac surgical ward and step-down unit environment
8. Demonstrated ability to make decisions in times of emergencies
9. Excellent time management skills
10. Demonstrated ability to communicate (written and verbal) effectively with patients, families and other members of the health care team; demonstrated strong interpersonal, communication and teamwork skills
11. Demonstrated ability to promote professional development
12. Demonstrated leadership and critical thinking skills
13. Demonstrated commitment to patient and family-centered care
14. Demonstrated ability for independent action, initiative, problem-solving, organization and prioritization
15. Able to model high level of professional behavior in an inter-professional environment.
