Newfoundland and Labrador Health Service, Central Zone is seeking applications for a Physician Assistant Pilot Program. The Physician Assistant Pilot Program is for three years.
Physician Assistants (PA) are advanced practice clinicians who have a broad scope of practice and practice medicine under the supervision of a licensed physician, acting as an extension of the supervising physician. PAs work will depend on the delegating physician. PAs can work in any clinical setting to extend physician services, complement existing services and aid in improving patient access to health care. PAs can collect patient histories and conduct physical examinations, diagnose and treat illness, counsel on preventative health care, assist in surgery, order tests, prescribe medications, order diagnostic investigations including but not limited to laboratory and diagnostic imaging, and perform investigations (within their scope of their training and experience, and the scope of practice of their supervising physician).
The Physician Assistant will have primary clinical focus on hospital-based family medicine programs including Surgical Assist and Hospitalist Programs. The Physician Assistant may work in other clinical programs such as the emergency department, to provide services such as patient histories, provider referrals, order medications, and perform minor therapeutic and diagnostic procedures; hospitalist programs, to assess and admit patients, order medications and tests, provide charting or other administrative services.
