Job Description

POSITION DESCRIPTION:



A Peer Support Worker is a trained individual who utilizes their own lived experience of a mental health and/or substance use issue in the service of supporting others. The Peer Support Worker provides non-clinical one-to-one and group-based supports that are both community and office based. The focus of this position is on using a formal model of peer support to foster client connection, wellness and self-determination through supportive listening, empowering people, and sharing information about peer support and tools for wellness and recovery.

Hours of Work

: 28 hours per week, between Monday to Friday, 8:30 am - 4:30 pm

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:



1. Establish and maintain trusting relationships with clients through developing trust and rapport, sharing common experiences with the client as relevant, supporting them to create a life of their choosing and to connect with naturally occurring community resources and peer networks.

2. Act as a role model in self-care, self-awareness and the use of wellness and recovery tools.

3. Meet with clients 1:1 in the environments of their choice (community and office) providing peer support by "doing with", exploring experiences of mental health challenges/systems towards developing empowered relationships with personal wellness, and fostering courage and hope through connection with someone with shared experiences.

4. Facilitate non-clinical self-help groups for CMHA clients or individuals on the waitlist for MHCSS services, ensuring a safe and non-judgemental space for clients to share, connect and learn.

5. Develop and facilitate training, feedback and coaching for peers, volunteer peer supporters, co-workers and the community.

6. Promote the peer programing internally and participate in relevant organizational meetings such as resource groups, committees and staff meetings.

7. Complete administrative duties and required documentation.

Maintains up-to-date clinical records of all client involvement, according to peer support standards and agency standards. Willing to work in an environment where use of technology is part of the day-to-day operations and is confident in performing aspects of the job virtually through tools and technology. Participate in case conferences and meetings to contribute to a collaborative approach to services.
8. Participate in supervision and peer support co-reflection (monthly 1:1 and group with PSO), and peer support communities of practice.

9. Participate in education, program development, evaluation, research and continuous quality improvement activities

Co-facilitates skills training, educational or support groups for clients with CMHA staff as appropriate. Participate in the evaluation of program goals and objectives making recommendations on changes to current program activities for improved service delivery.
10. Take responsibility for Professional Conduct and Development

Participate in any required or relevant training and/or information sessions. Maintain up-to-date knowledge of mental health legislation, social service agencies, government departments, institutions, etc. Work in compliance with CMHA policies and procedures. Work in compliance with specific legislation and peer support standards of practice Represent the program and agency in a professional manner including professional appearance and use of appropriate language and behaviour.
11. Deliver services in a way that maintains personal safety and the client's physical, social, cultural and emotional well-being. This includes staff developing the appropriate skills and knowledge through ongoing training. The peer support worker is required to:

Maintain client documentation, progress notes and correspondence. Update electronic calendar. Report any incidents in relation to clients and any potential hazards. Understand the employee's responsibilities regarding health and safety.
12. Outreach and collaboration with internal and external stakeholders to promote client recovery and build awareness of peer support.

Develop formal links and networks with other peer supporters and with community peer support resources. Provide individual consultation or group presentations on peer support to staff as requested and promote person-centered and recovery-oriented practices at CMHA. Work with other team members and partner organizations to address emerging issues in community settings. Participate in special events and activities for agency public education campaigns such as Mental Health Week, Mental Illness Awareness Week.
13. Accept the dynamic nature of the work of the Branch by responding to evolving program and client needs in a manner that is consistent with qualifications and experience.

QUALIFICATIONS:



Education:

High School Diploma and/or a College Diploma in a relevant field.

Experience

: Experience as a client of mental health or substance use services and a demonstrated ability to share this expertise in the context of empowering others. Previous employment as a peer support worker and volunteer experience in an official peer support role is an asset.

Training:

Training in a recognized program for Peer Support Work (E.g. PSO Peer Support Training, Core Essentials OPDI) or, a commitment to acquire this training is required. Training certifications in programs such as WRAP or Pathways to Recovery are an asset or, a commitment to acquire these certifications is required.

Certifications:

First Aid / CPR, ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training) others as applicable.

Other:

Legally able to work in Canada, able to provide a Vulnerable Sector Police Record Check, proof of academic achievement, a valid picture ID, and a means of transportation.

Location:

311 McArthur Ave., work on-site and in the community.

Job Type: Part-time

Pay: $28.41-$29.72 per hour
