Job Title: Peer Support Worker
Reports to: Program Manager
Hours of Work: 9AM-5PM Monday- Friday
Wage: $19.64

Position Summary:


Peer Support Workers within Alpha House are individuals who have lived through similar experiences to those individuals Alpha House seeks to help. They are trained to help support and improve the lives of our clients, many of who have been impacted by addictions and or mental health issues, by engaging them where they are at in their journey, without judgement or expectations.

Responsibilities:

  • Seek out clients who may be isolating and encourage their participation in programming
  • Escort clients on daily outings as well as providing indigenous activities
  • Connect with indigenous clients and support them in connecting with their heritage
  • Treats clients with respect and dignity, interacting with them in a caring, non-judgmental manner
  • Set and maintain clear boundaries and keep to task
  • Assists in monitors clients\' safety and well-being, and getting support when needed
  • Provide one on one support to clients who need extra care and attention, including assisting with personal hygiene and or showering
  • Completing chores, including cleaning (including bodily fluids), laundry and assists with moderate to heavy lifting
  • Assist in maintaining record keeping, and data for all shifts
  • Participation and attendance at regular team meetings and in program evaluation as needed
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of all policies and procedures and ability to reference them from appropriate sources
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory standards (MSDS, OH & S, WHMIS), which includes assisting in maintaining cleanliness of the building, including regular room inspections and room cleaning support as required

Qualifications Required:
  • Should have lived experience and be solid in recovery
  • Cultural awareness and sensitivity related to those with Indigenous heritage
  • Be familiar with community resources that support and serve indigenous individuals
  • Experience in Outreach and Indigenous Ceremony work is an asset
  • A desire to work with vulnerable individuals with addiction and or mental health issues, and the ability to respect all clients and treat them with dignity
  • Understanding of issues related to mental health needs and substance use
  • Must be tolerant, non-judgmental with a high degree of compassion and empathy towards the homeless and those struggling with addictions and or mental health
  • Solid interpersonal communication skills and the ability to communicate showing respect and dignity as well as with discretion and maintain confidentiality of clients
  • Team player with strong written and oral English communication skills
  • An understanding of the 12 Step Program and or Well-briety would be an asset
  • An understanding and appreciation for the Protection of Persons in Care Act.

Position Requirements:
  • Proof of being fully vaccinated against COVID
  • Be able to physically assist clients from prone to sitting or standing, and vice versa
  • Able to provide a Vulnerable Sector Search, valid within the last six months, that does not contain any results material to the position
  • FOIP Certification
  • \xe2\x80\x9cIt\xe2\x80\x99s your Move\xe2\x80\x9d training, or equivalent Patient Lift training
  • Ability and willingness to obtain a Class 4 Drivers license, would be an asset
