PEACE OFFICER6 Month ContractA rewarding, exciting and challenging experience awaits! We are looking for a Peace Officer to join our team for 6 months! This role is to act in an administrative/enforcement position, ensuring by-laws are kept current, permits and licenses issued/processed, regulatory and licensing by-laws are enforced, and carry out all administrative office-oriented work that relates to by-law enforcement. EMPLOYEES THAT REPORT DIRECTLY TO THIS POSITION: Bylaw officer ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assist in the overall administrative operations of Community Enforcement Services responsibilities including complaint recording, permit/license issuance and maintenance of records.
Prepare necessary documentation and process charges laid according to law including the service of offense tickets and summons for violations of town bylaws and Provincial Act. Serve subpoenas on witnesses required for court proceedings for said charges. Attend court when required and complete (PIS) Prosecutor Information Sheets with court disclosure.
Ensure that bylaws are up-to-date and enforceable and preparing recommended changes as required.
Organize and operate the promotion of awareness/cooperation/adherence to municipal bylaws through public information and education programs as appropriate.
Prepare status reports as required for the Supervisor, Town Manager, and Town Council.
Liaison with all law enforcement agencies.
Liaison with Planning and Development Department regarding Land Use Bylaw breaches.
Record complaints from the general public and complete investigative follow-up.
Consult with supervisor regarding approval of major policy/direction/priorities and interpretation of Justice and Solicitor General\xe2\x80\x99s Provincial policy.
Responsible for the enforcement of all Town of Slave Lake Regulatory Bylaws and Provincial Acts.
Provide co-response level with RCMP, EMS or Fire when available or requested.
Patrol the community and investigate all alleged breaches of town bylaws and Provincial Acts (Traffic Safety Act, Gaming and Liquor Act, Environment Protection and Enhancement Act).
Provide effective Disaster Response and co-response at the direction of the RCMP.
In the absence of the Animal Control Officer, respond to and deal with animal control issues.
Health and Safety: Must adhere to all safety standards under the Occupational Health and Safety Legislation, Town Policies and Procedures and WHMIS Guidelines. For specific responsibilities of this position, refer to the Town\xe2\x80\x99s Health and Safety Policy, Section 2 \xe2\x80\x93 Responsibilities for CAO, Directors, Supervisors and Workers.
Assist other Peace Officers in such duties as may be required.
Perform other related duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS / EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE:
Minimum Grade 12 education.
Preferred 2-year minimum experience in some area of active, field law enforcement work, with an understanding of bylaw enforcement and provincial acts would be an asset.
Completion of the basic Peace Officer course at the Alberta Justice Staff College or equivalent police experience acceptable to the Solicitor General would be an asset.
Current First Aid Certification.
Valid unrestricted Alberta class 5 driver\xe2\x80\x99s license.
Must have or be eligible for Community Peace Officer Level I Appointment
As a condition of employment, the candidate must provide an RCMP security clearance, drivers abstract, and successfully complete an Enhanced Security/Reliability Screening.
Successful completion of the PARE (Physical Abilities Requirement Evaluation) fitness test under 4 minutes 45 seconds.
Radar and EVOC courses would be an asset.
Certification in OC spray and ASP Baton.
Ability to defuse potentially volatile situations and to recognize and react appropriately to dangerous situations.
Ability to use current computer software including \xe2\x80\x9cMOVES\xe2\x80\x9d and REPORT EXEC\xe2\x80\x9d.
Knowledge of Powers of Arrest under Section 494 and 495 of the Criminal Code.
Must qualify for \xe2\x80\x9cCPIC Access\xe2\x80\x9d \xe2\x80\x93 Required to submit fingerprints.
SKILLS REQUIRED:
Good written/verbal communications, interpersonal and public relations skills.
Sound understanding of provincial and municipal law.
Sound understanding of Investigative techniques.
Demonstrated skill in the writing of investigative reports.
Demonstrated knowledge of computer and keyboarding skills such as Microsoft Word

Potential exposure to various animals while assisting designated Animal Control Officer.
Requires participation in shift rotation that can include evenings and weekends.
Involves the risk of exposure to potential dangerous or volatile situations.
