General: The MD of Lesser Slave River has a permanent full-time Community Peace Officer Level 1 position. Reporting to the Senior Peace Officer, the position will perform law enforcement duties across a vast boreal forest territory, two hours north of Edmonton. This means the position will work proactively with the public with respect to Municipal District bylaws, public safety, infrastructure protection, traffic safety, and relevant authorization of provincial statutes. The Peace Officer will be responsible for: \xc2\xb7 Participates in the enforcement of the legislation of the Acts and Regulations as appointed \xc2\xb7 Makes lawful and reasonable, use of powers afforded the position and maintains a constant awareness of the problems and risks associated with the discretionary use of such powers. \xc2\xb7 Patrols rural road, provincial highways, and communities to prevent and detect offences; issues warning and violation ticket where necessary \xc2\xb7 Responds to inquiries, complaints, or requests for assistance from M.D. residents in a timely manner. \xc2\xb7 Enforces load restriction orders, road bans, and Road Use Agreement conditions. \xc2\xb7 Prepares court briefs and presents evidence in court as required. \xc2\xb7 Performs animal control as needed. Priority is to be assigned to dog control, especially when situations of aggressive dogs, or strange behavior and/or danger to public safety are identified. \xc2\xb7 Enforce municipal bylaws, provincial statutes, and legislation by responding to complaints, initiating investigations, and finalizing complaints. \xc2\xb7 Issue violation tickets, lay charges, process summons and subpoenas, assist with prosecutions, and represent the Municipality in a court of law. \xc2\xb7 Provide friendly and informative education the public, relating to municipal bylaws and bylaw services. Education and Certifications \xc2\xb7 Grade 12 Diploma \xe2\x80\x93 required \xc2\xb7 Minimum age of 18 years old \xe2\x80\x93 required \xc2\xb7 Successful completion of the Physical Abilities Requirement Evaluation (PARE) \xe2\x80\x93 required \xc2\xb7 Successful completion of the Community Peace Officer Induction Course or training equivalent \xe2\x80\x93 required \xc2\xb7 Community Peace Officer Level 1 appointment under the Government of Alberta Peace Officer Program \xe2\x80\x93required \xc2\xb7 Possess valid Possession and Acquisition License (PAL) \xe2\x80\x93 required \xc2\xb7 Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver\xe2\x80\x99s License (as minimum) \xe2\x80\x93 required \xc2\xb7 Level C First Aid and CPR - asset Abilities and Experience \xc2\xb7 No criminal record and not a subject of criminal investigation \xe2\x80\x93 required \xc2\xb7 Proficiency with computers and Microsoft Office programs, with the ability to independently create and edit a variety of documents and spreadsheets \xe2\x80\x93 required \xc2\xb7 Experience in policy development and working with elected officials \xe2\x80\x93 asset \xc2\xb7 Experience with GIS systems \xe2\x80\x93 asset \xc2\xb7 Excellent social, communication, and relationship management skills \xe2\x80\x93 required \xc2\xb7 Ability to work well under pressure, individually and as part of a team \xe2\x80\x93 required The successful candidate will be rewarded with a competitive salary and benefits package, a variety of developmental opportunities, and the opportunity to make a real difference.
