The Opportunity
The City of Grande Prairie is looking for community minded and motivated Peace Officers that are looking to make proactive changes within our community.
Peace Officers provide a uniformed, community-based presence; maintaining social order, keeping the peace, enforcing Municipal, Provincial and Federal laws (where authorized), attending court, preventing crime, addressing matters of public safety, and responding to the needs of the community, city-wide through proactive patrols and dispatched calls. *
Responsibilities*
Key Duties & Responsibilities
Reporting to the Director of Enforcement Services or their designate, the Peace Officer will:

  • Provide education, investigation and enforcement of specific City Bylaws, Provincial Statutes and Federal Laws. This will involve the collection of evidence, completion of reports, and providing court/adjudicator testimony.
  • Complete proactive foot, bicycle, and vehicle patrols of assigned areas within the City to deter negative behaviours, identify infractions or safety concerns, and to assist the public when required.
  • Perform Traffic Safety activities such as traffic control, collision investigation, and both moving/non-moving traffic enforcement.
  • Participate in community engagement activities on behalf of the Department that include providing education, workshops, bike rodeos, and BBQs.
  • Conduct Animal Control such as collecting animals running at large, licensing checks, welfare investigations, and responding to animal attacks.
  • Assisting the RCMP and other partner agencies/departments as required and within authorized authorities.
  • Ensure excellent customer service through the course of their duties and tactfully resolve confrontational situations.
  • All duties will be conducted in accordance with department policies and procedures, Bylaw C-829, and all applicable Provincial and Federal Statutes.
  • Will perform other departmental duties as directed by the Enforcement Services Manager or their designate.

You Bring*
Minimum qualifications required to apply:
  • Diploma in law enforcement/social sciences (or similar) from a recognized institution or an equivalent level of training and experience
  • Valid Alberta Driver\xe2\x80\x99s license \xe2\x80\x93 Class 5 (or equivalent) with no more than 6 demerits
  • Must be comfortable and proficient with electronic hardware (laptops, smartphones) and the use of software (email, mobile applications, word processing)
  • Proven ability to tactfully handle and resolve confrontational situations
  • Valid Physical Abilities Requirement Evaluation (PARE) certificate. Locally, the PARE is offered at the Eastlink Centre. It is also offered at other locations across Alberta.
Full required qualifications: In addition to the minimum required qualifications above you will need to meet the following job requirements within 24 months of hire date.
  • Successful completion of approved Community Peace Officer Induction Program (CPOIP) or equivalent
  • Must obtain and maintain appointment as a Community Peace Officer (Level 1)
  • Standard First Aid must be obtained prior to start date.
** Must obtain and maintain an RCMP Enhanced Security Clearance prior to beginning employment.

Salary/Wage*
Peace Officer: $44.38 as per the Collective Agreement **Wages currently under negotiation.** *
