Job Description


The Opportunity Reporting to the Manager, Compensation & Benefits, the Payroll Specialist is responsible for producing accurate and timely payments to all employees, and acts as one of the primary contacts for the organization regarding pay-related inquiries. The Role

  • Prepare, verify, process, balance, and audit semi-monthly payrolls for salaried and hourly employees in accordance with provincial and federal legislation, policies and procedures
  • Act as a strategic advisor to clients by reviewing and verifying integrity of payroll data
  • Partner with HR Business Partners to ensure payroll process are aligned to company standards
  • Partner with the HR Business Partners to resolve employee issues around payroll
  • Main point of contact for employee questions on payroll policies and processes
  • Process off-cycle payments
  • Complete Record of Employments
  • Calculate and process taxable benefits
  • Calculate and process allowances, retroactive pay, vacation pay, overtime and shift differential and deductions such as garnishments, and other pay related transactions
  • Ensure transmissions to the bank for deposits are processed for each pay.
  • Investigate deposits that are returned and determine the appropriate action to resolve the issue
  • Process Payroll transmission to Finance
  • Reconcile Canada Pension Plan (CPP) and Employment Insurance (EI) deficiencies
  • Work with Controllers to resolve finance and payroll issues
  • Review Payroll processes and provide information of payroll system requirements and determine potential avenues for improvement
  • Support with regular system updates by testing payroll functions
  • Follow up on employee onboardings and information entered
  • Other duties as assigned by the Manager, Compensation & Benefits
Technical Capabilities of the Role

  • Very strong technical proficiency with an HRIS system, preferably Workday

  • Capable of working in ambiguity and identifying optimal approach for finding a resolution
Qualifications & Experience
  • Diploma or Degree, with preference given to Human Resources, Business Administration, Accounting or a related field
  • Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) certification is an asset
  • 1 to 3 years\xe2\x80\x99 experience in a Payroll role
  • Experience in Payroll Accounting
  • Experience working in an environment supporting multiple provinces; supporting employees remotely
  • Experience with continuous improvement or other project management initiatives is strongly preferred
