Good Shepherd Ministries provides food, shelter, clothing, medical care, housing services, and pre-and-post addiction treatment services for people struggling with poverty and homelessness.

We are currently accepting applications for a Part-Time Weekend Cook position.

Role Summary:

Reporting to the Manager, DARE Program, the Cook enhances the dignity and quality of life of our clients through his/her assumed responsibility in coordinating the meals and snacks for the residents, co-workers, volunteers and clients according to the need and the menu cycle.

Responsibilities for this position include the following:

To carry out all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the Mission, Vision, and Values of Good Shepherd Ministries. To provide service in a dignified, respectful and hospital manner that reflects the Mission, Vision and Values of Good Shepherd Ministries and which integrates non-discrimination/anti-oppression/anti-racism frameworks. To observe all health and safety rules and regulations and to work in a manner that minimizes risk to yourself, clients, co-workers and others as well as to the property of the Good Shepherd Ministries. To perform your job responsibilities in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Policies and the Occupational Health and Safety Act. To comply with the established rules of operation, procedures, policies and code of conduct. To comply with work scheduling and attendance requirements according to policy and practices. To respond to clients, co-workers, visitors and volunteers in a courteous, respectful and hospitable manner. To prepare and serve meals and snacks for the residents, co-workers, volunteers and clients according to need and the menu cycle. To coordinate food handling, food storage and kitchen/dining room hygiene according to the instruction of the Manager, DARE Program, Policies and Procedures, and Food Safety and Nutrition Standards and Health & Safety regulations. To coordinate and supervise Food Service co-workers and volunteers as per instructions of the Manager, DARE Program, and in keeping with the Mission, Vision and Values of Good Shepherd Ministries. To oversee the safe handling of food preparation and storage. To ensure that the Health and Safety standards are to be maintained at all times. Care must be taken when using machinery and knives. It is forbidden to use equipment without first receiving instruction. It is forbidden to use faulty equipment; this must be noted in the Maintenance Report Book and the Manager, DARE Program must be informed in writing. To assist with the daily deliveries, evaluate, record and correctly and promptly use or store, food orders and/or food donations. To oversee the correct disposal of kitchen waste and recyclables. To ensure the 'Personal Hygiene' policy is to be maintained at all times. To ensure that Food Service co-workers and volunteers maintain agency dress code, hygiene standards and workplace safety standards as per Policies and Procedures. To ensure that Health & Safety standards are maintained at all times, particularly in the use of machinery and equipment. To maintain the confidentiality and ethical standards of Good Shepherd Ministries at all times. To perform any other tasks as required or as assigned from time to time by the Manager, DARE Program.
Skill, Nature and Scope:

Catering and Cookery skills acquired through recognized catering program or course, or through extensive and progressive experience in food services; Demonstrated organizational skills and staff/ volunteers' coordination skills; Demonstrated ability to prepare accurate reports, order supplies and equipment maintenance, prepare purchase orders; Excellent written communication and interpersonal skills to maintain teamwork with the ability to communicate effectively with individuals from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds; A minimum of two years experience in a high-volume food services environment; The completion of the Department of Health Food Service Certificate in food handling, storage, preparation, and presentation of food; Valid CPR/ First Aid Certificate and Food Handlers Certificate are required; Knowledge of WHMIS requirements and associated precautions.
