Position Summary:
The Casual
Shelter Support Worker
plays a key role in maintaining a safe, clean, and restful environment for guests during overnight hours at the Winter Shelter. As front-line staff, they are responsible for ensuring guest safety, supporting basic needs, and completing light janitorial duties while guests sleep. This role requires strong observational skills, clear communication, and the ability to respond calmly and effectively to emergencies or disturbances. The overnight support worker collaborates closely with on-site security and morning staff to ensure a smooth transition into the daytime shelter schedule.
Key Responsibilities:Guest Safety & Monitoring
Conduct regular safety checks on sleeping guests throughout the shift.
Respond quickly and appropriately to guest needs or emergencies, including overdoses or conflicts.
Support and coordinate with security personnel during incidents
Maintain healthy boundaries and de-escalate conflict when necessary.
Shelter Operations
Oversee and support the setup and takedown of sleeping mats or bedding areas.
Monitor guest intake as required and maintain accurate records.
Ensure the shelter remains clean, safe, and quiet overnight.
Assist with laundry duties and light janitorial cleaning (e.g., dining area, bathrooms, floors, garbage removal)
Set up and serve breakfast for guests.
Wake guests and support them in exiting the shelter in alignment with the schedule and procedures.
Team & Administration
Communicate shift updates clearly in logbooks and incident reports using reporting apps.
Attend staff meetings and 1:1 check-ins with the Winter Shelter Coordinator and Operations Manager.
Maintain confidentiality and uphold professional, respectful interactions with guests, staff, and volunteers.
Qualifications & Assets:
Experience in frontline, shelter, or support work preferred
A certificate in Human Services or related training is an asset.
Current First Aid, CPR, and Naloxone training required.
Strong crisis intervention, communication, and problem-solving skills
Ability to remain alert and responsive throughout overnight hours
Comfortable working with vulnerable or marginalized populations
Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector clearance required.
Strong English speaking, reading, and writing skills are necessary.
