20+ hours per week. Shifts will be 11:00pm to 7:00am Weekdays, Weekends, Holidays, etc.
The ideal candidate will have a friendly and approachable demeanour and possess a non-judgmental attitude with the ability to empathize. The individual should possess competence, and a passion to help.
The role of the Shelter Support Worker will include but is not limited to:
Provide a safe, supportive, non-judgmental environment to shelter clients
Perform intake/discharge duties (navigating client throughout the shelter; recording medications; checking and accounting for belongings; checking for safety hazards and contraband)
Contribute to meeting the personal, physical, emotional, psycho-social needs of the client in a holistic approach while performing according to facility policies
Model positive behaviour and maintain good relations with clients and other agencies by communicating in a supportive, and respectful manner while maintaining confidentiality
Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of the shelter
Responsibilities:
Must have excellent verbal, written, listening skills and maintain confidentiality
Basic computer skills required with the ability to learn and utilize new software (i.e., HIFIS)
Experience with adults experiencing homelessness, mental illness, and substance abuse is an asset
Must have the ability to remain calm and respond effectively in emergency situations
Ability to deescalate conflict in a professional and effective manner
Must be reliable and mature
Ability to clearly communicate rules to ensure positive, constructive environment within the shelter
Must be adaptable to change and have the ability to work under pressure

Qualifications:
Human Services Diploma or other related post secondary education
Relevant work experience preferred
A combination of education and experience will be considered for this position
A criminal record check and vulnerable sector check is required
Must be 19+ years of age
