The Technologist is an integral member of the Orthopaedic Care Team and works with all associated health care professionals in delivering patient care and assuming appropriate responsibilities concerning all orthopaedic procedures. The Orthopaedic Technologist works alongside the physician in the OR as well as independently in the clinic setting, attending to issues related to the application, adjustment, removal, and repair of a variety of casts, splints and traction fitting. The Technologist is also responsible for teaching patients and families in regards to these practices.
Duties include and are not limited to:

  • Application, adjustment, repair, and removal of casts;
  • Application of walking devices;
  • Bi-valving, wedging, and windowing of casts;
  • Assisting physicians with procedures (e.g., closed reductions, minor surgical treatment, etc.) with or without anaesthetic using sterile technique;
  • Assist in the application, maintenance, and adjustment of traction (skin, skeletal, manual), and patient education of traction therapy;
  • Ordering of orthopaedic supplies and ensuring proper maintenance of same.
Hours of WorkMonday - Friday, 7.5 hour shiftsYour Qualifications
  • Minimum High School Diploma or G.E.D required.
  • Current certification with the Canadian Society of Orthopaedic Technologists (CSOT) preferred.
  • Minimum one (1) year of community college education in health care discipline required.
  • LPN, Paramedic, or Kinesiology education or experience preferred.
  • Current successful completion of CPR Level C Health Care Provider within in the last 12 months required.
  • Previous experience in a similar role preferred, experience in a pediatric setting would be considered an asset.
  • Experience working in fracture clinic setting will be considered a strong asset.
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of Windows, MS Office Programs including Word and Outlook.
  • Demonstrated strong time management, analytical, and problem-solving skills required.
  • Demonstrated excellent organization skills, strong communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills required.
  • Demonstrated initiative, self-motivated, and flexibility to meet workload demands required.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within a care tam as well as the ability to work independently under the direction of the Orthopaedic Physician or Nurse Practitioner required.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively and efficiently in a fast paced outpatient environment with multiple priorities and concurrent activities required.
  • High regard for quality and attention to detail required.
  • Demonstrates appropriate judgement, critical thinking, and discretion in handling confidential/sensitive information required.
  • Proven knowledge of aseptic technique, theory and application of skin, skeletal and manual traction, and anatomical structures, their relationships with one another, and ability to articulate orthopaedic conditions an asset.
  • Competencies in other languages an asset; French preferred.
