We provide comprehensive facilities maintenance, operations and renovation services for lands and buildings owned by the University of British Columbia.The Municipal Services group is responsible for providing waste management services, soft and hard landscape services, as well as moving and general labour services for all of the Vancouver campus.The Operator is responsible for the safe operation of equipment used in day to day operations of Municipal Services. The Operator works with a variety of equipment such as, 40 cubic yard front loading Garbage truck, 42 yard side loading Recycling truck and a Roll off container truck. The Operator is responsible for working in accordance with the Motor Vehicle Act and the National Safety Code and in a safe, simple, sustainable and efficient manner.Organizational StatusThe Operator reports to the Manager, Municipal Services and receives daily work assignments and directions from the Operations Head for Waste Management The Operator works with a variety of trades and labourers within the Municipal services unit as well as within Building Operations as a whole. Responsibilities are performed both independently as well as with other members of the team, depending on the nature of the work.Work PerformedWorks from oral and written instructions in accordance with established procedures. Operates Waste Management equipment on a day to day basis. Maintains a daily operations and required inspections log book.Under the general direction of the Operation Head for Waste Management, loads and transports compacted and or loose garbage and recyclable material for discharge to designated locations in the Lower Mainland.Carries out daily/weekly operating maintenance service and checks in accordance with operating manual, and ensures that scheduled maintenance is carried out by mechanic.Operates vehicle in a safe manner and follows established safety procedures and practices.Carries out any other related duties as necessary in keeping with the qualifications and requirements of the job.Consequence of Error/JudgementThe Operator determines the most efficient and effective way to operate equipment to perform work; incorrect decisions generally result in minor delays. Given the nature of the work and equipment operated there is potential for public safety issues and/or financial impact due to damage of equipment or property.Supervision ReceivedThe Operator reports to the Manager, Municipal Services and receives daily work assignments and directions from the Operations Head for Waste Management.Supervision GivenNone.Preferred QualificationsHigh School graduation, air brake ticket and valid Class 3 driver s licence.Minimum of 2 years related experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.Previous experience in operating heavy equipment and a Comprehensive knowledge of city and provincial traffic highway laws. Must be familiar with, or be able to learn, current relevant safety regulations. Ability to follow policies, procedures, and instructions. Ability to work both independently and within a team environment. Ability to provide quality service to customers in a courteous, patient manner. Ability to develop and maintain cooperative and productive working relationships.
