The NAIT Centre for Sensors and System Integration (CSSI) is hiring a key leadership and support position for the team. Reporting to the Director of Applied Research the Centre Operations Manager will be primarily responsible for supporting the project execution and delivery of industry client projects. As a member of the management team within the centre, the Operations Manager will use subject matter expertise to lead and facilitate operational excellence in the delivery of applied research and training solutions. The operations manager is a member of the central leadership team, which includes centre research chairs, senior technical lead, and the Specialist, Research Administration. The Centre Operations Manager will strive to build a multidisciplinary environment where staff can deliver product development and validation testing solutions to industry. The Centre Operations Manager will also contribute and collaborate with other centres towards the development and implementation of standard operating procedures with the aim of improving quality, productivity and efficiency of project teams.

The ideal candidate will have proven leadership skills, and be able to demonstrate an understanding of project management with applicability to the R&D environment as well as experience working within multi-disciplinary teams. They will exhibit a high level of interpersonal savvy, an ability to manage ambiguity, demonstrate self-awareness, an ability to manage conflict as well as build networks of others to support and supplement centre activities. Knowledge of the local business area, team-building skills, and leadership capabilities will be critical to allowing the manager to enable the centre to meet its business goals.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Break down barriers to the success of the technical and service delivery team so that they may focus on the job of better serving clients.
  • Directly responsible for coordinating and assisting centre staff and internal NAIT service providers with day-to-day management of the Centre with the following goals: project delivery (with centre technical staff), project financial management (with Project Support Office), strategic human-asset management & decision-making, funder-outcome reporting.
  • Build strong, result-oriented teams and support direct reports in solution delivery, professional growth and development
  • Secure and deploy resources effectively and efficiently
  • Know the most efficient and effective processes to get things done with a focus on continuous improvement
  • Lead inter centre and departmental coordination
  • Lead inter centre process alignment for CSSI
  • Assist with the development of new business lines for the centre
  • Lead the centre Industry Advisory Board including board materials development and reporting
  • Act as the NSERC TAC manager and support the TAC Advisory Board
Skills & Abilities:
  • Principles of financial management in the public sector and in the unique and evolving context of NAIT Industry Solutions business requirements and processes.
  • Strong leadership and communications skills and an ability to communicate and organize ideas in a clear and concise way
  • Effective listening - to assure quality uptake of stakeholder ideas and positions.
  • Effective meeting management - to ensure all voices are heard, and agenda items are gathered and addressed.
  • Conflict resolution - to effectively address misunderstandings and disagreements.
  • Coaching - to guide skill development in supervised staff
  • Stress management - to address and alleviate stress in others and in self
Qualifications:
  • Minimum: Bachelors Degree or Diploma in a related technical field
  • Recommended: Significant experience (10+), and/or formal post-secondary training in business/management, or project management
Remuneration: $3,281.61 - $4,347.73, plus a comprehensive benefits package.
