Purpose and General Description:
Every year, the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) hires interns to assist with various aspects of delivering its conservation program, while gaining valuable skills in the conservation sector. In 2023, the Nature Conservancy of Canada will be hiring one communications intern to work for the Ontario Region. The communications intern will assist both the communications and fundraising teams with a wide variety of content development, outreach, research, and promotional activities. Working independently and with NCC staff, the intern will help to develop regional content for NCC\xe2\x80\x99s digital and print publications, promote NCC\xe2\x80\x99s regional activities in communities across Ontario, contribute to both virtual and in-person event coordination, and assist with the creation of materials intended for donors. The intern will also assist with the organization of digital assets. This position is a great opportunity for the successful candidate to apply classroom theories and skills to practical and hands-on work. Tasks such as researching stories, conducting interviews, writing, editing and proofreading for a variety of media, as well as assisting with media outreach and event promotion will allow the intern to apply and develop skills that are highly valued in the communications and public relations sectors of the workforce. Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Support the development of content for various audiences and distribution channels.
  • Research and write stories to showcase NCC\xe2\x80\x99s conservation impact.
  • Where needed, perform interviews with staff or external sources.
  • Support the coordination, delivery and tracking of events, and marketing and communications activities.
  • Create, edit and catalogue digital assets (both photos and videos).
  • Update and edit NCC\xe2\x80\x99s website (Ontario section)
  • Assist both the communications and fundraising teams with ongoing activities as needed.
  • Assist with researching key markets and/or prospective donors.
Required Skills and Attributes: This posting is targeted to individuals possessing the following skills:
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including confidence with journalistic-style interviewing techniques.
  • Strong writing skills, with a particular aptitude for identifying and telling great stories.
  • Experience editing, proofreading, and fact-checking.
  • Appreciation for nature, ecology, wildlife, habitat conservation and/or the great outdoors.
  • Organized, attention to detail.
  • Has an interest/experience in public engagement and communicating environmental topics.
  • Self-starting, proactive and capable of working both independently and in a team setting.
Terms of Employment:
  • Subject to funding, this is a 3.5-month position from May 18, 2023 until August 31, 2023 (with possibility of extension).
  • Compensation: $19.40/hour.
  • Position is based out of their home office, preferably in southern Ontario.
  • The position may require occasional weekend and evening work.
