The EFry Health Centre is a community-based, interdisciplinary primary care clinic operated by the EFry Health Services Society. We provide compassionate, trauma-informed, and culturally safe care to vulnerable and marginalized women and children in Surrey. Our integrated team includes physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, social workers, allied health professionals, and dental providers.
Position Summary:
In an integrated team-based care model supporting vulnerable, marginalized women, and children, the Occupational Therapist's scope of practice is multifaceted and focused on empowering individuals to engage in meaningful activities and achieve their highest level of functional independence. The Occupational Therapist plays a pivotal role in providing holistic and patient-centred care, addressing the unique challenges faced by this population. Their scope of practice includes, but is not limited to, the following:

Comprehensive Functional Assessments:
Conducting comprehensive assessments to evaluate the physical, cognitive, sensory, and emotional factors affecting patients' ability to participate in daily activities and routines.

Individualized Treatment Planning:
Developing personalized treatment plans that focus on improving functional abilities and facilitating independent living. These plans are tailored to address the specific needs, preferences, and cultural backgrounds of vulnerable women and children.
3.
Adaptive Strategies and Assistive Technologies:
Recommending and implementing adaptive strategies and assistive devices to support patients in performing daily tasks and activities more easily and efficiently.
4.
Virtual Occupational Therapy Services:
Providing virtual occupational therapy services through digital platforms, ensuring accessibility and continuity of care for vulnerable individuals who may face barriers to in-person healthcare.
5.
Life Skills Training:
Assisting patients, especially children, in developing essential life skills, such as self-care, hygiene, and social skills, to enhance their overall independence and confidence.
6.
Sensory Integration Therapy:
Employing sensory integration techniques to address sensory processing challenges and support emotional regulation and self-awareness.
7.
Home and Environmental Assessments:
Conducting home and environmental assessments to identify potential safety hazards and recommending modifications to create a more accessible and supportive living environment.
8.
Collaborative Care Coordination:
Working collaboratively with other healthcare professionals, educators, caregivers, and community support services to ensure a coordinated and holistic approach to patient care.
9.
Mental Health and Well-being:
Addressing mental health and emotional well-being by incorporating therapeutic interventions to manage anxiety, depression, and trauma-related challenges that may affect daily functioning.
10.
Family and Caregiver Education:
Providing education and training to family members and caregivers, equipping them with the necessary tools and knowledge to support and encourage patients' progress.
11.
Cultural Competency:
Demonstrating cultural sensitivity and understanding to respect diverse cultural beliefs and practices, ensuring the delivery of culturally competent care.
12.
Health Promotion and Prevention:
Engaging in health promotion activities to raise awareness of the importance of occupational therapy in supporting overall health and well-being among vulnerable populations.
The Occupational Therapist's scope of practice in an integrated team-based care model aims to improve the functional abilities and quality of life of vulnerable, marginalized women, and children. QUALIFICATIONS:
Current full registration with the College of Occupational Therapists of British Columbia (COTBC).
Two (2) years recent related experience in community practice
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
In-depth knowledge of occupational therapy principles, assessment tools, and evidence-based interventions for various patient populations, including vulnerable individuals, women, and children.
Proficiency in conducting comprehensive assessments and developing individualized treatment plans to enhance patients' functional abilities and daily living skills.
Familiarity with adaptive strategies, assistive technologies, and sensory integration techniques to address physical and cognitive challenges.
Competence in providing virtual occupational therapy services through digital platforms to improve accessibility and patient care.
Knowledge of child development and pediatric occupational therapy practices to support children's growth and independence.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with interdisciplinary teams, patients, and caregivers.
Cultural sensitivity and understanding to respect diverse cultural beliefs and practices while delivering patient-centred care.
Strong problem-solving skills and creativity to tailor interventions and adapt treatment plans to individual patient needs.
Proficiency in documentation and record-keeping to maintain accurate and comprehensive patient records.
