Our Sudbury Operations have been in existence for more than 100 years. With five mines, a mill, a smelter, a refinery and nearly 4,000 employees it is also one of the largest integrated mining complexes in the world. Sudbury is also home to several administrative sites serving both the Ontario Operations as well as all our North Atlantic Operations.

Port Colborne is home to our Nickel Refinery where raw materials from our Sudbury operations are processed into electrocobalt and precious metals and serves as a distribution centre for finished nickel products.

The Opportunity

We are currently seeking an Occupational Hygienist, Local 2020-05 (known internally as an Intermediate Analyst, Occupational Health) to join our team in Sudbury.

The primary function of the role as an Occupational Health Analyst is to provide ongoing service, technical support and advice to the line organization on all matters related to occupational hygiene, to maintain compliance with applicable legislation, the SHE Management System as well as Service Level Agreements.

Accountabilities

In this position you will:

  • Execute on Occupational Hygiene Programs and associated medical surveillance requirements: Asbestos Abatement & Management; Designated Substance; Occupational Exposure Monitoring; Respiratory Protections; Hearing Conservation; Hazardous Materials; Heat Stress; Cold Stress; and other related programs.
  • Collect and analyze samples to assess worker exposure to physical, chemical and biological agents. Determine airborne exposure concentrations of contaminants and compare them to regulatory standards and guidelines as well as accepted occupational exposure criteria.
  • Identify and solve basic sampling strategies, collect and analyze samples to assess worker exposure to physical, chemical and biological agents. Apply statistical analytical techniques to summarize data.
  • Consult with analytical laboratories pertaining to sampling and analytical methods.
  • Perform health risk assessments that include identification, assessment, and analysis of the risk. Recommend controls and strategies to meet Occupational Hygiene standards and to reduce the risk to ALARA. Plan the work within the objectives and manage time accordingly.
  • Interpret the results of exposure evaluations and determine risk to employee health.
  • Report status of Occupational Hygiene programs to Joint Health and Safety Committee. Make recommendations. Approaches changing environments by being a resource and influencing work groups.
  • Participate in routine and complex work related investigations related to Occupational
Hygiene issues. Consult with the MOL. * Monitor, measure and report, analyze results, identify trends. Provide recommendations

for continuous improvement. * Provide education and deliver routine training presentations to workers.
  • Provide technical advice and support to the site to maintain compliance with the SHE Management System, Legal Requirements and Service Level Agreements.
  • Execute on personal safety plan.
QUALIFICATIONS AND SPECIFIC SKILLS:

Education: The successful candidate will possess a University or College Degree/Diploma in a science field or equivalent.

Experience: The ideal candidate will possess a minimum of three years of experience in occupational hygiene discipline. Experiences should include knowledge with workplace monitoring and sampling techniques, data collection, analyses and reporting and a working understanding of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations.

Computer Skills: Must have advanced knowledge in Microsoft Excel, Word and Power Point.

Other Skills: Use of technical monitoring equipment, conduct occupational hygiene risk assessments, administer Occupational Hygiene monitoring programs, manage databases.

Other Job Considerations:

Physical Effort: Moderate physical fatigue or strain results from frequent or longer periods of intense physical effort or almost continuous light physical effort. Moderate physical exertion may be required to do the job.

Working Environment: The workplace varies widely and may entail exposure to various outdoor conditions and risks expected during all seasons. This role will be above and below ground.
