Job Description

The NNADAP (National Native Alcohol and Drug Abuse Program) Worker plays a key role in improving the physical, mental, emotional, and social well-being of community members through culturally grounded prevention, intervention, and support services. The Worker provides holistic counselling, promotes Innu cultural awareness, strengthens partnerships, and connects individuals and families with appropriate resources. This role requires collaboration with the Social Health team and external agencies to ensure ongoing support, treatment, and healing. Services will be provided in both Innu-Aimun and English. The NNADAP Worker reports directly to the Director of Social Health Services.

Key Responsibilities

Provide culturally responsive addictions counselling and prevention programming using a holistic and strengths-based approach.

Develop and deliver individual, group, and community-based interventions that address substance use, trauma, and related social challenges.

Engage in case management, including intake, assessment, planning, referrals, follow-up, and documentation.

Facilitate cultural and educational workshops that integrate Innu knowledge, traditions, and healing practices alongside mainstream approaches.

Build and maintain positive relationships with community members, families, and partner agencies to support ongoing care.

Maintain accurate client records in compliance with confidentiality, ethical standards, and program guidelines.

Participate in community events and outreach to raise awareness of prevention, wellness, and healing supports.

Act as a role model for healthy, substance-free living in alignment with the Social Health Department's code of practice.

Contribute to program planning, reporting, and evaluation to strengthen service delivery.

Understanding of addictions, mental health, and recovery models, including harm reduction, relapse prevention, and wellness strategies.

Strong knowledge of Innu culture, language, customs, and traditions, with the ability to integrate cultural teachings into practice.

Awareness of community resources, referral pathways, and social service systems available locally and regionally.

Skills

Counselling and facilitation skills: Able to support individuals and groups through active listening, motivational interviewing, crisis intervention, and culturally informed approaches.

Communication skills: Fluent in Innu-Aimun and English, with the ability to communicate effectively across cultures, age groups, and contexts.

Collaboration skills: Works effectively as part of an interdisciplinary team and with external partners.

Organizational skills: Strong case management, documentation, and time management abilities.

Abilities

Ability to maintain professionalism, ethical practice, and strict confidentiality at all times.

Ability to adapt to flexible work schedules including evenings, weekends, and on-call support if required.

Ability to travel to training, workshops, or to accompany clients to treatment as needed.

Qualifications

Certification or diploma in Addictions, Mental Health, Counselling, or a related field with a minimum of two (2) years' experience in a related role.

A combination of education, training, and work experience will also be considered.

Fluency in Innu-Aimun and English (oral and written) is required.

Valid Code of Conduct and Vulnerable Sector Check.

Willingness to participate in ongoing training, supervision, and cultural learning.
