General Description:





Under the supervision of the Director of the Sipekne'katik Family Well-Being Program, the Nikmaq Family Support Worker provides culturally grounded support to children and families through direct service delivery, supervision of access visits, transportation, and ongoing case file management. This role plays a critical part in building healthy family dynamics, supporting reunification efforts, and connecting families to traditional and community resources.



"Nikmaq" (nig-a-maw) means "my kin-friend" or "relations," a concept that grounds this role in compassion, trust, and connection. The Nikmaq Support Worker provides direct guidance in family setting, maintains clear documentation, and steps in with one-on-one support sessions when caseload allows. This role requires flexibility, collaboration, and a deep commitment to community wellness.

Responsibilities:




Child and Family Support: 60%




Transport children to and from access visits and supervise family visitations as required. Provide detailed case notes and daily documentation in line with organizational policies. Support Families through culturally appropriate teachings on parenting, wellness, and household management. Offer one-on-one support sessions when caseload permits.




Home and Life Skills Coaching: 10%




Model daily routines including meal planning and preparation, childcare, and home maintenance. Support and facilitate workshops on healthy relationships, personal development, and life skills. Assist with community navigation, advocacy, and accessing available supports.




Case Management and Coordination: 10%




Build trust with families, conduct home visits, and co-create case plans and goals. Maintain accurate, confidential records and participate in regular case reviews. Attend court sessions, family group conferencing, and interagency meetings as required. Work in collaboration with band designate, school, daycare, health centre, and other professionals in the community.

Cultural and Community Engagement: 10%




Promote the use of traditional practices such as smudging, Medicine Wheel teachings, and sharing circles. Collaborate with internal departments (Education, health, Social, Elders) and external partners. Attend and support community programs and events like Wutanm and cultural workshops.




Teamwork and Development: 10%




Participate in weekly team check-ins, training sessions, and community resource reviews. Remain flexible to family schedules (including mornings, evenings, and weekends.)



Qualifications and Experience/Skills:




Education and Experience:




Diploma or Degree in Human Services or relevant work experience and training in community and family support Experience in working within Mi'kmaw community and families with knowledge of resources, parenting programs, food bank, and workshops. Understanding of child development, child abuse prevention, and trauma-informed practices.

Skills and Knowledge:




Strong case management, interpersonal, and communication skills. Ability to design and deliver workshops on parenting, relationships, and personal development an asset. Familiarity with Mi'kmaw traditions, teachings, and community dynamics.

Requirements:




Valid driver's license and reliable vehicle with insurance Must be in good standing with child welfare for at least five years. Current certifications in CPR, First Aid, and UMAB (or willingness to obtain upon hire)
