Position Summary
The Newcomer Children & Youth Summer Assistant will plan, develop and execute activities for newcomer children, youth and their families within Kingston. These activities will aim to support vulnerable newcomers and will supplement existing day camps and other summer activities, especially for families who were not able to register children in existing day camps due to limited availability, cost issues, or other barriers. The Summer Assistant will plan logistics, liaise with facilitators and partner-sites, acquire supplies and snacks, organize and facilitate activities and support participating children, youth and their families. The Summer Assistant will also support the activities of KEYS Newcomer Children & Youth Integration staff, communications with newcomer families, assistance navigating community services, orientation to the education system, advocacy, problem-solving, etc. The Summer Assistant will support the execution of English tutoring activities for children and youth. The ideal candidate will have a background in, or knowledge of, children and youth issues. Preference will be given to students in Early Childhood Education, Children & Youth Worker programs, Bachelor of Education programs or similar.
Competencies Required
a. Ability to facilitate workshops and group sessions in a positive and dynamic manner
b. Experience working with children and youth in a teaching, coaching or counselling capacity
c. Understanding of the Ontario education system
d. Good understanding of the challenges facing newcomers, especially refugee children, youth and their families
e. Ability to advocate to service providers on behalf of newcomers
f. Must possess strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work and communicate effectively within a diverse team environment with co-workers, clients and partners
g. Must treat all individuals with respect and interact in a tactful, supportive, professional manner
h. Demonstrated good judgement and a clear understanding of appropriate service boundaries
i. Demonstrated ability to work with families experiencing discrimination, racism and culture shock
j. Knowledge of the varied issues affecting children and youth in school, including bullying, LGBTQIA+ issues, accessibility, language acquisition, media literacy, etc.
k. Ability to promote confidentiality as a norm
Qualifications
a. Must meet the eligibility requirements of Canada Summer Jobs Program: must be under 30 years
b. Experience working with children & youth, newcomers, schools and youth services.
c. Preference will be given to candidates with a background in Early Childhood Education, Children & Youth Worker programs, Bachelor of Education or similar.
d. Excellent communication skills: verbal and written
e. Strong, confident presentation/facilitation skills
f. Excellent computer skills, including proficiency with ACCESS data bases and Excel
g. Proficiency in English. Knowledge of French, Arabic, Swahili, Somali, Dari, Turkish, Kirundi or other languages will be considered a significant asset.
h. Access to reliable transportation to get to work and between job sites will be required.
Work Environment (Equipment, Demands and Hazards)
a. Office setting with frequent travel to off-site locations within the KEYS catchment area, indoor and outdoor recreational activities within Kingston, and itinerant service locations.
b. Professional appearance is required; casual business attire.
c. 35 hours per week. Schedule to be determined in cooperation with the candidate. Most hours to be worked business hours Monday-Friday; activities on Saturdays and evenings required.
