Position Summary:



The Office of the Wet'suwet'en Natural Resource Department's purpose is to protect all lands and resources within the Wet'suwet'en Yintah (Territory) for the benefit of the Wet'suwet'en, develop capacity for economic development or our communities and to preserve these resources for our children and generations to come. The Referrals Coordinator will support this by overseeing and facilitating the various natural resource related activities that are being proposed on Yintah. They will be responsible for reviewing and responding to referrals and will work with the five (5) Clan Liaisons to ensure that Wet'suwet'en Anuk Nu'at'en (Law) is being upheld by bringing information to the Clans/House Groups, help facilitate decisions and/or work through identifying areas of priority for each of the Clans/House Groups. The Referrals Coordinator will establish, build and maintain relationships with a variety of proponents and companies including but not limited to representatives from government, the industry sector, the forestry sector, the mining sector, the clean energy sector, etc.

Roles & Responsibilities:



Implement the Wet'suwet'en Territorial Stewardship Plan, any resource development policies, procedures and plans.

Be the key contact within the Office of the Wet'suwet'en to coordinate all communication and contacts with government and industries operating in the territory.

Prepare, undertake and record all communication held with government and industry representatives and where necessary refer discussions to leadership, management or operations staff.

Coordinate meeting, site inspections, evaluation of studies, research of Wet'suwet'en traditional knowledge and providing the Natural Resources Department Manager with results of discussions held and information collection from industry.

Assist in the coordination of joint studies with industry.

Participate and support negotiations relating to the actions and desires relating to mitigating negative impacts and maximizing potential benefits to the Wet'suwet'en from resource development.

Coordinate communication with all levels of the community (primary house members) to understand aspects of the resource development industry, help develop and implement land stewardship and mineral resources management policies, procedures and activities.

Maintain ongoing relations with industry operating in the traditional territory.

Work with the community to monitor the implementation of agreements and ongoing changes within the company and respective resource development projects and communicate these in a timely fashion to the Manager.

Many factors must be taken into consideration when reviewing a referral.

Infringement of aboriginal Title & Rights

Forest health issues

Cultural heritage and Archeological sites

Chain reactions and impacts to ecosystems (water, soil, botanicals & wildlife)

Contentious or sensitive site-specific areas

Avoid degradation of land base for future Wet'suwet'en activities

Addressing concerns of the Wet'suwet'en plus understanding and utilization of current First Nations legal decisions and Wet'suwet'en Consultation principles.

Qualifications:



To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactory. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and or ability required.

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret complex technical reviews, government regulations and legal documents; ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals; ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of chiefs, managers, clients, and Wet'suwet'en public.

Is able to work with elders, and Wet'suwet'en speakers on a regular basis.

A valid B.C. driver's license and provide driver's abstract.

Preferred Skills:



Knowledge of the Wet'suwet'en cultural system is required. Fluency in the Wet'suwet'en language is considered an asset.

A bachelor's degree (B.Sc.) from a recognized university with specialization in; Environmental Science, Resource Management, Biology or related diploma in any other field related to the duties of the position primarily related to resource development; or three (3) experience and training in natural resource development industry is also required

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $35.00-$37.00 per hour

Expected hours: 35 per week
