Founded in 1986, Independent Living Canada (IL Canada) is the national umbrella organization, representing and supporting a network of 24 IL Centres across Canada. IL Canada promotes the Independent Living Philosophy of self-determination and control over one's own life as independent persons with a disability.

Position:

National Executive Director, Full time

Responsible to

: IL Canada Board of Directors

Positions Supervised

: All staff, project coordinators

Salary: $78,000.00 per year

Benefits:

Virtual work with some in-person requirements within Canada 4 weeks vacation must be taken annually (no carry over) Compassionate/Caregiver leave (annually) Medical leave (sick days - no carry over)
Schedule:

37.5 hours/week Monday to Friday, but may require some weekend availability Travel will be required

Overview


The National Executive Director is responsible for providing leadership and management to the national independent movement and centres in delivering the strategic directions established by the Board of Directors ("Board"). The National Executive Director (NED), in partnership with the Board of Directors, will be a strategic leader providing clear vision and long-term direction aligned with IL Canada's mission, values, and strategic goals, and will work collaboratively with the Board of Directors to establish priorities and drive systemic change in support of people with disabilities. The National Executive Director (NED) will lead national planning efforts and ensure alignment across regional and organizational initiatives.

They will be able to demonstrate success in leadership and experience supporting a Board of Directors in its governance role. The NED will represent IL Canada and act as principal liaison with various constituencies including agencies, governments, donors, sponsors and volunteers. This leadership role inspires an environment of excellence and accountability for the activities and results of all the operations of IL Canada that are consistent with Independent Living Canada's Mission and Vision.

Board Communications & Policy Development

Proposal and Grant Writing

Fundraising experience

Stakeholder Management

Support the management team of all IL Centres

Act as the national spokesperson for IL Canada, representing the organization in media, public forums, and policy discussions.

Advance disability rights and Independent Living principles through advocacy at the federal level and in partnership with other disability organizations.

QUALIFICATIONS:



It is desirable for the successful candidate to have knowledge and familiarity with disability, inclusion, and accessibility. The ideal candidate will have lived experience of disability, successfully led other not for profit associations and experience with revenue diversification. The successful candidate should have a demonstrated knowledge of the Independent Living movement and a commitment to the Independent Living philosophy.

Must be PWD (person with a disability) or have lived experience

Post-secondary degree in Business; Social Services, Social Sciences, Public Policy, or related field

Bilingual (English and French) preferred

Other languages spoken would be considered an asset

Minimum 2 years work within not for profits

Minimum 2 years' experience of work with a Board of Directors and understanding of a governance versus an operational board

Experience leading a small team independently

Demonstrated organizational, leadership and management ability

Strong business acumen with experience managing a diverse budget over a million dollars

Excellent and clear communicator who loves getting out in the community and building a positive network

Proficient computer skills to include MS office suite, Project Management, and virtual platforms

You must be able to articulate how your education and experience will benefit the position directly

Must be a Canadian citizen or have permanent resident status

Experience



Proven experience in a leadership role within a nonprofit or similar organization. Strong skills in negotiation, with a successful history of securing partnerships or funding. Demonstrated ability in business development and expanding organizational capabilities. Experience in project management, including planning, execution, and evaluation of projects. Excellent communication skills with the ability to inspire and motivate teams. A commitment to fostering an inclusive environment that values diversity. RESUME DU POSTE



Le(la) directeur(trice) general(e) national(e) est responsable d'assurer le leadership et la gestion du mouvement national de la vie autonome et des centres, afin de mettre en oeuvre les orientations strategiques etablies par le conseil d'administration ( le Conseil ). Le(la) directeur(trice) general(e) national(e) (DGN), en partenariat avec le conseil d'administration, sera un(e) leader strategique offrant une vision claire et une orientation a long terme, alignees sur la mission, les valeurs et les objectifs strategiques de VA Canada, et travaillera en collaboration avec le conseil d'administration pour etablir les priorites et favoriser des changements systemiques au benefice des personnes en situation de handicap. Le(la) DGN dirigera les efforts de planification nationale et veillera a l'alignement des initiatives regionales et organisationnelles.

Il/elle pourra demontrer des reussites en leadership et une experience de soutien a un conseil d'administration dans son role de gouvernance. Le(la) DGN representera VA Canada et agira comme principal(e) interlocuteur(trice) aupres de divers groupes, y compris les agences, les gouvernements, les donateurs, les commanditaires et les benevoles. Ce role de leadership inspire un environnement d'excellence et d'imputabilite pour les activites et les resultats de l'ensemble des operations de VA Canada, conformement a la mission et a la vision de Vie Autonome Canada.

Les domaines cles d'intervention pour le(la) directeur(trice) general(e) national(e) sont les suivants.



Leadership Planification strategique, gestion financiere et projets speciaux Gestion des operations Communications avec le Conseil et elaboration de politiques Recherche de financement et redaction de subventions Experience en collecte de fonds Gestion des parties prenantes Soutenir l'equipe de direction de tous les centres VA Agir comme porte-parole national(e) de VA Canada, representant l'organisme dans les medias, les forums publics et les discussions sur les politiques. Faire progresser les droits des personnes handicapees et les principes de la vie autonome par la defense des droits au niveau federal et en partenariat avec d'autres organisations de personnes handicapees.

QUALIFICATIONS:



Il est souhaitable que la personne retenue possede des connaissances et une familiarite avec le handicap, l'inclusion et l'accessibilite. La personne ideale aura une experience vecue du handicap, aura dirige avec succes d'autres organismes sans but lucratif et possedera une experience en diversification des sources de revenus. La personne retenue devrait demontrer une connaissance du mouvement de la vie autonome et un engagement envers la philosophie de la vie autonome.

Doit etre PSH (personne en situation de handicap) ou avoir une experience vecue Diplome d'etudes postsecondaires en administration des affaires; services sociaux, sciences sociales, politiques publiques ou domaine connexe Bilingue (anglais et francais) de preference La connaissance d'autres langues serait consideree comme un atout Minimum de 2 ans de travail au sein d'organismes sans but lucratif Minimum de 2 ans d'experience de travail avec un conseil d'administration et comprehension de la distinction entre un conseil de gouvernance et un conseil operationnel Experience de direction autonome d'une petite equipe Aptitudes demontrees en organisation, leadership et gestion Solide sens des affaires avec experience de gestion d'un budget diversifie de plus d'un million de dollars Excellente capacite de communication, aime aller dans la communaute et batir un reseau positif Maitrise des outils informatiques, incluant la suite MS Office, la gestion de projets et les plateformes virtuelles Doit pouvoir expliquer clairement en quoi sa formation et son experience profiteront directement au poste Doit etre citoyen(ne) canadien(ne) ou resident(e) permanent(e)
