About the Opportunity

The role of the Music Therapist will be to support the hospice and community based palliative care programs in the Annapolis Valley to promote relaxation and well-being for patients. There is a dual reporting responsibility to the Health Services Manager for Valley Hospice as well as the Annapolis Valley Community Palliative Care team. The Music Therapist provides compassionate care that respects human dignity and acknowledges the various abilities of patients. The Music Therapist collaborates with an interdisciplinary team, guided by the Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics for Music Therapists (set by the Canadian Association for Music Therapy). The Music Therapist demonstrates sound professional judgment and initiative while working within the established philosophy, guidelines, policies, and procedures of the organization.

About You

We would love to hear from you if you have the following:

  • Bachelor\xe2\x80\x99s Degree in Music Therapy (including the completion of 1000-hour clinical internship.)
  • Current registration with the Canadian Association of Music Therapy.
  • One-year recent clinical experience would be considered an asset.
  • Minimum of one-year combined experience in the delivery of music therapy in a healthcare setting
  • Experience with geriatric population would be considered an asset.
  • Professional music skills including proficiency on piano or guitar and voice; and ability to improvise on primary instruction.
  • Ability to comfortably navigate grief and emotionally rich environments
  • Excellent oral, written and listening communication skills.
  • Ability to interact positively with patients, families, other health care providers and staff with a pleasant and cooperative attitude, demonstrating sensitivity, empathy, and warmth.
  • Ability to adapt and understand patients\xe2\x80\x99 needs, assisting them in meeting their fullest physical and emotional potential within the prescribed therapy using both active and passive engagement
  • Ability to build strong therapeutic relationships
  • Commitment to promoting a culture of respect that supports safety, ethical practices, cultural awareness, and organizational health.

  • Able to use basic Microsoft programs (Outlook and Edge)
  • Physical and mental capabilities to perform the duties of the position such as:
  • the ability to use/play instruments
  • the ability to work with patients with various medical conditions
  • exposure to pets such as pet therapy dogs
  • ability to deal with stressful situations relating to agitated, confused, aggressive or hostile behavior of patients/residents.
  • Competencies in other languages an asset, French preferred
Hours
  • Part-Time Long Assignment, 50% FTE; 37.5 hours biweekly
  • Approximately 12 months
  • Some travel required, mileage to be provided
Compensation and Incentives

$32.16 - $40.40 Hourly
