Job Summary
The Music Specialist is responsible for leading engaging programming that introduces campers to musical exploration, rhythm, instruments, and creative expression through sound. This includes planning and teaching fun, age-appropriate music activities, building confidence through hands-on musical experiences, and creating an inclusive environment where every child can express themselves.
The Music Specialist works collaboratively with counsellors, fellow specialists, and the Program Coordinator to bring music to life at camp. They support campers of all experience levels, encouraging creativity, teamwork, and a love of music.
Responsibilities
Lead music sessions that incorporate rhythm games, singing, instrument exploration, movement, and creative sound activities.
Teach fundamental music skills such as beat, rhythm, listening, musical expression, and group performance.
Create engaging activities and short musical experiences tailored to different age groups.
Foster a supportive, inclusive, and fun atmosphere where campers feel safe to experiment and make music.
Provide individualized guidance and encouragement to campers with varying comfort and skill levels.
Ensure safety, proper supervision, and positive behavior management during all activities, including responsible use of instruments and materials.
Maintain a professional, enthusiastic, and approachable presence with campers, parents, and staff.
Experience
Experience playing a variety of instruments, music education and/or performance
Previous experience working with children in a camp, school, or recreational setting.
Experience teaching or leading youth in music is an asset.
Ability to create a fun, inclusive, and imaginative environment for children.
Strong communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
Ability to work collaboratively with a team and support diverse camper needs with patience and professionalism.
