Museum interpreter Location: Killam Brothers Building, 90 Water St.Yarmouth, Nova Scotia 16 weeks at 40 hours/ week. $15.00/hour May 15 - August 31, 2022 Duties: The museum interpreter role involves taking visitors on an entertaining and informative guided tour through The Harbourfront Museum and offering an accurate depiction of the history underlying items, artifacts and pictures. The interpreter will partner with colleagues to create informative and entertaining presentations. Develop and present educational programming and demonstrations for the general public and other visiting audiences. Develop a walking tour based on the families home and businesses that are featured in the museum. Design and develop props and teaching aids for presentations. Interact with visitors, respond to questions and conduct visitor surveys. Welcome museum and exhibit visitors and provide orientation and general information. Assist with marketing and promoting museum and exhibit programs and events. Research about historic transportation, accommodations, entertainment, retail business and activities to enhance the story of the site. Assist with the planning, promotion and execution of a range of public events for the museum throughout the summer through local media as well as social media. Assist in the development and updating of a website. Employees will also be responsible to assist with the daily management of museum revenues from admissions, gift shop sales, donations, etc. Assist patrons and staff with research. Qualifications: The successful candidate will be attending university and have completed university courses in history, archival studies, museum studies or cultural/historical studies or communications. He or she will be competent in all Microsoft Office computer applications. The candidate must have excellent communication skills. Knowledge of the history and culture of Yarmouth County and Southwest Nova Scotia will be considered an asset, along with experience in customer service and a knowledge of French. Previous experience in drama would be an asset. Must be a full-time student returning to or entering in an education program at a recognized university in the fall of 2023. Must be dependable, self-motivated and be able to work independently with limited supervision. Must be legally entitled to work in Canada, between the ages of 16 and 30 years, and without another full-time job.
