Position Title: Museum Curator (Maternity Leave)


Reports to:

Museum Operating Committee and Museum Board

Position Summary:


The North Bay Museum is seeking a Curator to fill a one year maternity leave contract. The Curator will report to the Museum Operating Committee and Board of Heritage North Bay and provide supervision and oversight of collection development, exhibit development, staffing, and related programming.

Collections/Curation Duties Include:


-Assess artifacts for inclusion or removal from the museum collection, accession artifacts, and identify and implement possible improvements to museum storage and/or organization
-Conduct research and compile data regarding genealogy, collection development, conservation and maintenance, and requests from the public
-Assist with the development and implementation of museum programs which connect to current museum exhibitions.
-Oversee the development of temporary exhibits in conjunction with staff, volunteers, and community partners.
-Find and schedule external temporary exhibits from external partners
Work with Museum Coordinator to train and supervise volunteers and summer students
Contribute to North Bay's Municipal Heritage Committee as a representative of the North Bay Museum.

Administrative Duties Include:


-Oversee the development of annual budgets and participate in the review and approval process of the budget
- Maintain financial records with museum comptroller and Museum Coordinator and monitor and authorize expenditures, purchase supplies and materials as needed for museum exhibits, collections, and programs.
In collaboration with the Museum Coordinator ensure staff is knowledgeable of and in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, WHMIS, applicable legislation, regulations, statutes, departmental policies/procedures, operational guidelines, and perform safe work practices.
Represent the museum with customers, community groups, cultural associations, historical associations, private/corporate sponsors and the written and electronic media.
Prepare concise timely reports/recommendations, and attend meetings of the Museum Operating Committee (regularly), museum board (as required), and other committees as required.
Seek out and assist with the preparation of annual grant applications related to museum collections management and exhibits.

Desired Qualifications:


Completion of a post secondary degree or diploma in Museum Studies or related discipline
Experience working in a museum setting in position related to exhibit development and/or collections management
Experience conducting historical, contemporary and community research and utilizing research to create museum exhibitions and/or programs
Experience in planning, researching, and creating exhibits, installations and media presentations in traditional and/or non-traditional settings.
Local history knowledge an asset
Ability to speak French is an asset, but is not required for this position.

Job Types: Full-time, Fixed term contract

Pay: $50,000.00-$58,000.00 per year
