The Opportunity:

The Chronicle Herald is seeking a multimedia journalist to join our team in Halifax, N.S.



Our ideal candidate is skilled at web reporting, proficient at writing stories about the news of the day quickly and efficiently and can condense information in a way that explains or analyzes what's happening for our online readers.



Driven by the demands of speed and online readership growth, the multimedia journalist must flexibly juggle assignments as well as generating ideas for content to attract and keep readers returning to the Chronicle Herald.ca daily. A strong understanding of search engine optimization (SEO)and best practices for the webis considered a bonus, as is familiarity with platforms like Wordpress, but support and training will be provided.



Our candidate is a team player, willing to work with colleagues to do investigative pieces or larger projects, and able to work independently, as this is a work-from-home role. However, the candidate must be able to provide in-person coverage of events in the Halifax metro region.



The ability to use digital tools to identify story ideas, as well as to cultivate sources, is critical to the position, as is working closely with the newsroom director and assistant managing editor on a daily basis.



The position is a unionized job in Halifax, working with a remote newsroom.

What you'll do:

Reporting and writing stories for print, web and mobile audiences - as well as tailoring content to meet the varying needs of those platforms. Initiating and developing ideas for enterprise stories and investigative projects. Cultivating sources and establishing expertise in order to break stories and set the news agenda. Ability to work constructively as part of a newsroom team. Filing video clips for digital platforms; working with digital teams to create interactive maps and graphics, searchable databases, and other multimedia elements.

Who you are:

You have 1+ years of newsroom experience. Flexibility to write effectively in breaking news, features and short form is essential. Fluency in digital platforms, multimedia journalism, and social media. You need an ability to identify trends and drivers behind the news that allows you to explain why and how, as well as what is happening. Pitching explainer stories on a regular basis to break down news in a format readers can easily understand is essential. Experience and strength in video or podcast presentation is an asset.

The details



This is a unionized position at 37.5 hours per week, with occasional weekend and evening work as required. Salary range starts at $38,000 to $52,000, depending upon experience. The likely starting date for this position is Sept. 2.
