This course provides an overview of the history and development of jazz music. The course traces the performers and style periods important in the evolution of jazz, from its 19th century African-American folk origins through its many styles and sub-genres to the present. An emphasis will be placed on listening in order to recognize by ear the attributes unique to jazz, its repertoire, and its artists. In addition, students will study the social and historical factors that affected the music during its development.
Position Requirements
The successful candidate must possess a Master's degree in music. Preference will be given to candidates who possess a doctorate degree in music. University teaching experience is also preferred.

MU 204 is currently scheduled as asynchronous online delivery - Spring 2025.
The in-person final exam will be the responsibility of the instructor.
