MMIWG2S+ Database Research Writer - Competition 2023-044 Full-Time Term until March 31, 2023 with possibility of extension Closing Date: May 3, 2023
Position Summary

Under the direction of the First Nations Family Advocate Office (FNFAO), the Database Research/Writer will work closely with the Database Coordinator to conduct research to inform the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Two-Spirit, Lesbian, Gay, Transgender, Queer, Questioning, Intersex and Asexual + (MMIWG2S+), Manitoba-Specific Database. The incumbent will be responsible for supporting engagement with First Nations citizens and collecting historical and current data information.
Key Responsibilities

  • Support engagement with families, individuals with lived experience, Elders, Knowledge Keepers and community organizations who work to support MMIWG2S+ families.
  • Collect and record ongoing research as it pertains to informing the development of a MMIWG2S+ Database.
  • Research local, provincial and federal sources of MMIWG2S+ data and information, including reports, inquiries and media stories.
  • Review, collect and extract data from reports on regional and national issues and other developments relevant to MMIWG2S+.
  • Begin inputting currently accrued data into the database once established.
  • Compile and track data and stories collected from engagement to enter into the Database.
  • Support the incubation of a First Nations-led research methodology that is consistent with the requests and needs of those most impacted by this crisis and utilize this methodology to determine our region-specific indicators of MMIWG2S+.
  • Prepare drafts of documentation including correspondence, reports, briefing notes and other documents.
  • Establish a trusting relationship with staff through clear communication and teamwork.
  • Utilize data gathered to inform the development of a media strategy and social awareness campaign to facilitate engagement and education with the public as it relates to MMIWG2S+.
  • Establish meaningful contact with impacted families and individuals to help update the database as required.
  • Liaise with Database technicians to support data entry for the ongoing, effective operation and moderation of the MMIWG2S+ Database.
  • Support publishing the MMIWG Database online which synthesizes sources of historical and currently active MMIWG2SLGBTQQIA+ cases in Manitoba which is interactive and provides for inclusivity for those most impacted.
  • Attend meetings and/or conferences and provide quarterly reports on progress to management and funders as required.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications Education & Experience
  • Completion of post-secondary education in the Social Services/Social Science field including, Social Work, Native Studies, Human Rights; an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Have 2 to 4+ years\xe2\x80\x99 experience conducting research, analysis, and preparing recommendations on MMIWG2S+ and/or issues that affect First Nations.
  • Be familiar with First Nations research methodologies and possess knowledge of other statistical methods, techniques, and processes to develop analytical frameworks.
  • Possess strong knowledge of First Nations culture, history, treaty, and inherent rights, the impacts of colonization and gender-based violence.
  • Experience working with First Nations and First Nation organizations and/or entities.
  • Experience in facilitation, public speaking and engagement.
  • Training in loss and grief, crisis intervention, mental health, and other healing and wellness activities.
  • Excellent verbal, written, interpersonal communication and presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide analytical support while managing multiple projects and deadlines.
  • Proficient use of Microsoft Office Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Be able to follow office practices, procedures, and confidentiality.
  • Knowledge of First Nation people and communities in Manitoba.
  • Ability to work flexible hours and be able to travel upon request.
  • Must have a valid Class 5 Driver\xe2\x80\x99s License and a reliable vehicle.
  • Must have a current satisfactory Criminal Record Check, Clear Adult and Child Abuse Checks.
