We have a proud history of mining in Manitoba, dating back to 1956 when we discovered the Thompson Nickel belt. Our operations in Thompson are in the heart of the Northern Boreal Region \xe2\x80\x94 the Hub of Northern Manitoba

Our Team:

The Thompson Mines Technical Services (MTS) Team is integral to the success of the operations in being a safe and reliable producer. We aim to design and plan safe, sustainable ore extraction through technical excellence in the areas of geology, mine planning, ventilation, backfill, ground control, drill/blast and survey control.

The Opportunity

We are currently seeking a Mining Engineer to join our Thompson, Manitoba operations. This is a permanent position.

Reporting directly to the Divisional Midrange Supervisor, the mining engineer will complete Mid-Range mining scenarios in the 3 to 24 month planning window. This includes providing plans and designs to support the mining team and the 24 month rolling schedule, as well as the annual life of mine plan submission.

Additionally, in this position you will:

  • Provide technical services as required/requested by the MTS team to support Manitoba mining operations.
  • Technical output will align with Home Safe and Vale Production System (VPS) principles and will meet quality and timeliness expectations.
  • Sound working knowledge of plant workflows.
  • Able to perform more complex professional or technical work at an advanced level in areas such as preparation of mining proposals, mine development, drilling, blast design, sandfilling, and cost evaluations.
  • Provides 3 to 24 month mining production plans/designs to support site strategic commitments.
  • Provides 20 scale development layouts, as required.
  • Completes management of change (MOC) as required for changes to mine design.
  • Site(s) Focal point for KPD (Key Performance Driver) information requests.
  • Support Base Metals Planning and Engineering 2nd Layer Technical Assurance (risk management groups), as required.
  • Update and maintain prints and digital drawings to reflect current mining activity status.
  • Be available to participate and provide material for both planned and unplanned production and safety meetings.
  • Track and update infrastructure implementation (materials handling, services upgrade, equipment implementation, etc.).
  • Provide technical support for site safety and/or efficiency initiatives.
  • Effectively interacts with colleagues & operations personnel at the site to optimize communications and efficiency.
  • Perform site visits as required.
About You

Education:
  • University degree in Mining Engineering
  • BSc in Mining Engineering Preferred
  • P. Eng license or ability to apply for one in Manitoba required.
Experience:
  • A minimum of 4 to 8 years of related experience.
Skills:
  • Project management skills with knowledge of mine construction costs, methods and durations.
  • Have a thorough understanding of business impacts (financial/value) within the plant and awareness of interfaces external to the plant (production, inventories, cost, capex, purchase feed) \xc2\xb7
  • Application of appropriate tools for business case evaluations (ex. mines OEM).
  • Able to work with, understand, and incorporate into the design, the expertise brought to the project such as, various Engineering Disciplines, Financial Analysis, and the understanding of the complete mine infrastructure and operation and its relation to the planning being done.
  • Participate and be a member in the capital risk ranking process at the plant level.
  • Ability to screen business cases (ex. Engineering requests, upgrades, mobile equipment).
  • Able to develop sound business cases for change management to advance continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Strong computer skills, proficient in current mine planning and design software.
