Because at uOttawa, you belong!

Position purpose:

Reporting to Psychotherapy Managers at the Student Health and Wellness Center, conduct the initial mental health unit triage process to assess students' summary mental health needs and well-being, with a view to directing them to the appropriate professionals and resources, thus promoting a culture of well-being, perseverance, and academic success.

In this role, your responsibilities will include:

Lead the complex process of assessing (administering questionnaires, assessing need, providing support) of student needs, within the Centre's mental health and student health and wellness unit, by asking personal and relevant questions to target, in collaboration with the student, his needs in terms of well-being and mental health.

Meet students who show up punctually at the Center, to support them when they experience emotional distress. Intervene in suicide prevention and establish safety plans with students in crisis and at risk.

Participate in interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary meetings to follow the evolution of programs and services and present the needs of students by inviting colleagues to present how their sector can meet them.

Consult regularly with colleagues from health promotion teams; student support; school accommodation; the psychology team; psychotherapy, psychiatry, etc., to observe and decelerate trends in student needs.

Refer students to clinic professionals following the primary evaluation process, while maintaining communication with managers to maintain equitable distribution among professionals. This responsibility is carried out considering their expertise, experience, and availability. Communicate on a weekly basis to colleagues the effectiveness of this referral process and the issues encountered (e.g. waiting time) in order to adjust effectively.

Ensure the continuous development of skills in active listening, empathy, and clinical judgment to demonstrate knowledge, know-how and interpersonal skills in the evaluation meeting. Participate in clinical consultation sessions to enrich one's skills and contribute by sharing with the team student needs, trends likely to respond to adapt our service offer.

Referral to internal and external resources at the University. In keeping with our stepped care model, assign students with complex and specialized needs to external resources to meet their needs. Communicated to the managers of the psychotherapy team the referral needs so that they can create and maintain other partnerships
