The Branch works in partnership with many others who share in the commitment to supporting the broad determinants of health. Position Summary The Mobile Mental Health Crisis Worker provides brief on-site risk assessments, crisis counselling and treatment, and community connection to services for individuals presenting with severe mental health and addictions concerns from 911 police calls. The Mobile Mental Health Crisis Worker works in collaboration with Police Officers, Hospital Staff and Crisis Workers from COAST, Urgent Support Services and Safe Beds as well as other community service providers. The intent is to ensure client safety, to encourage empowerment, and provide crisis resolution and prevention, within a recovery framework which integrates the client into their community with supports. Applicants must be available to cover a potential of weekday and weekend hours during non-traditional operational hours on a relief basis to cover vacation, sick time, training, statutory holidays, and other coverage needs as they arise. Must be available to provide shift coverage on short notice. Essential Job Functions

  • Ride with Niagara Regional Police Officers in their vehicles responding to potential mental health related calls
  • Respond to individuals in crisis situations in the community through crisis counselling and intervention
  • Complete mental health assessments
  • Assess risk to the individuals in crisis and to those around them
  • Recommend measures to help protect the individual or others by developing safety plans
  • Provide clinical intervention with a sound knowledge of: crisis intervention, recovery based practice, severe and persistent mental illness and substance use issues, clinical therapeutic interventions, community resources and services, and safety assessment tools
  • To ensure support and follow up to individuals in crisis through conducting cross service/sector linkages and acting as a liaison by consulting with family members and other professionals, in direct collaboration and with the consent of the individual being served
  • Promote good public relations and healthy community partnerships and alliances
  • Educate the community on the functions of the Mobile Crisis Rapid Response Team
  • Participates in the preparation and delivery of police Crisis Intervention Training as required
  • Ensure accurate and timely reports, data entry and documentation in relevant systems (i.e. CRMS)
Essential Job Requirements
  • Masters or Bachelor Degree in Nursing, Social Work or Occupational Therapy (other degrees with relevant experience may be considered).
  • Registered as either a Registered Social Worker, Registered Social Service Worker, Registered Nurse, Nurse Practitioner, or Registered Occupational Therapist and good standing and adheres to all standards of practice as per the College
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in crisis/community mental health & addiction setting providing assessment, consultation, treatment and education to target population
  • Clinical knowledge and experience in application of clinical therapeutic techniques
  • Certified in the following safety courses: Safety Care, First Aid and CPR, Suicide Intervention (ASIST) and Mental Health First Aid and Use of Force training
  • Demonstrated knowledge of relevant legislation (e.g. the Mental Health Act), the use of psychotropic medication, psychiatric diagnosis and formulation of a mental health assessment for a diverse age group and population
  • Knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal Community and Aboriginal Based Services
  • Proof of COVID-19 vaccination or verification that you are unable to be vaccinated
  • Must have access to a reliable personal vehicle and current valid class \xe2\x80\x98G\xe2\x80\x99 driver\xe2\x80\x99s license
  • A satisfactory high level police screening
  • Actual life experience and/or lived experience with mental illness or addictions an asset
  • Bilingualism is preferred
