Your Opportunity:

Alberta Health Services has an exciting medical leadership opportunity for a physician with training and expertise in Public Health and Preventive Medicine to join the Indigenous Wellness Core (IWC) as the Public Health and Preventive Medicine Lead (PHPML). The Public Health and Preventive Medicine Lead, Indigenous Wellness Core (PHPM-IWC) develops strategies to improve the health and well-being of the Indigenous population in Alberta through health promotion, disease and injury prevention, and health protection to achieve the goals detailed in the Indigenous Health Commitments: Roadmap to Wellness. The Indigenous Health Commitments: Roadmap to Wellness aligns with the principles of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and the calls to action of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada, providing the framework for this position. This role involves working collaboratively with Alberta Health Services operational and medical leads in the IWC and Population & Public Health to provide high-quality, innovative, and efficient health services to Indigenous individuals and communities. Successful collaboration will be achieved by engaging and collaborating with Indigenous communities, promoting a culture of safety, advocating for high-quality care and representing the IWC to ensure that Indigenous voices are heard. The PHPM-IWC will be an inclusive and visionary leader with the ability to build relationships, trust, and collaboration between Alberta Health Services and Indigenous communities and have demonstrated abilities in communication, conflict resolution, negotiation, and a passion for quality and patient safety. The ideal candidate will possess superior interpersonal skills, an ability to mentor other Indigenous and non-Indigenous physicians and be able to relate and engage with Indigenous leadership and Indigenous organizations.

Description:

Participating in the development, implementation and evaluation of overall strategic and operational plans to support patient-focused care programs and delivery related to Preventive medicine and public health; Collaborating with Indigenous Wellness Core Innovation & Research team to assess and measure the health status and impacts of the social determinants of health of the Indigenous Population of Alberta; Advocating for and participating in the development and evaluation of interventions at the population level to address and improve health outcomes of the Indigenous Peoples of Alberta; Promoting health systems quality improvement and quality assurance activities for the services provided through the Indigenous Wellness Core as well as other Alberta Health Services affecting Indigenous Peoples; establishing effective modes of communication and engagement with physicians and program partners. The Public Health and Preventive Medicine Lead, Indigenous Wellness Core role is 0.5 FTE. The successful candidate can also apply to support other Population and Public Health portfolios (Ex. Emergency Disaster Management, Injury Prevention, etc.) up to a 1.0 FTE. The role offers excellent flexibility as it allows you to work remotely anywhere in Alberta. Required Qualifications:

Doctor of Medicine (MD) eligible for licensure in Alberta. Licensed or eligible for licensure by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta (CPSA). Hold or be eligible for an appointment with the Alberta Health Services Medical Staff.
Additional Required Qualifications:

Experience working with Indigenous communities or with Indigenous people. Training or certifications that support health delivery within Indigenous populations. Accomplished verbal and written communication skill that allows for the delivery of key public health messages across an array of audiences that include medical and non-medical groups and interviews with the media. Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain strategic relationships with key stakeholders, patients and interdisciplinary colleagues that span municipalities, provincial and federal governments to achieve population health goals.
Preferred Qualifications:

Fellowship with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC) in Public Health and Preventive Medicine (or equivalent). Other combinations of post-graduate education and experience in public health will also be considered.
