Medical Laboratory Technician/assistant (6 Months Contract)

We are in search of a motivated and team-focused Laboratory Technician to join our Hematology/ Chemistry Department. As an integral member of our team, you will play a crucial role in supporting diagnostic procedures and ensuring the accurate and timely processing of patient samples.

RESPONSIBILITIES and DUTIES



Keep accurate records of all specimens received in the laboratory by documenting the patient's name, physician's name, date and time of procurement, tests ordered, laboratory accession number and name of person responsible for procurement of sample. Sample preparation for analysis, separate serum or plasma from red cells by centrifugation ensuring that all sera are cell-free and transferred into a clean tube which has been clearly and accurately labeled for correct identification of the patient and specimen. Prepare specimens, reagents, supplies and media in readiness for the technologists to perform the testing. Make blood films from whole blood or finger prick, whenever blood is drawn or received for complete blood counts. Label each slide with the patient's name, date of collection and laboratory accession number. Stain blood films and cover slip slide preparations in readiness for microscopic examination by the technologist. Set up Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rates and microhematocrits. Using reagent impregnated "dip-stix", perform routine urinalysis tests such Specific Gravity, pH, Glucose, Protein, Blood, Bile, Ketones, etc. Prepare a sediment of the urine sample by centrifuging and decanting the supernatant for the microscopic examination by a medical laboratory technologist. Planting and streaking of specimens and controls for microbiological examination by using techniques, methods, reagents, media, equipment and supplies as specified in the microbiology manual for each type of specimen. Set up of anaerobic and CO2 jars for reading by a technologist. Prepare concentrations of stool samples and stain and cover slip slide preparations for microscopic examinations by a medical laboratory technologist. Operate automated analyzers by processing test samples, standards and quality controls, only after a qualified medical laboratory technologist or supervisor has confirmed and checked the calibration and proper functioning of such automated equipment on each day of its use. Set up of serology tests (e.g. occult blood, pregnancy) including serial dilutions for reading by a medical laboratory technologist. Recording quality control results for interpretation and approval by qualified staff. Monitor temperatures of thermally controlled equipment and CO2 levels in incubators. Perform routine equipment maintenance. Perform titrations using a pH meter. Assist in the washing of laboratory glassware, general housekeeping and preparation of lab kits. Transcribe test results from laboratory workbooks or analysis sheets onto the correct report forms of individual patients, for review and signing by the technologist or supervisor. File reports and slides and retrieve records as may be required.

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE



Previous experience in a Medical Laboratory (Hematology/ Chemistry) is not mandatory but will be viewed as an asset MLPAO certificate or equivalent experience Demonstrates a good understanding of Quality Management Systems and able to incorporate methodology into laboratory processes. Strong attention to detail and accuracy in work. Knowledge of relevant laboratory safety and compliance regulations. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Able to utilize critical thinking skills and appropriately prioritizes work Works collaboratively with the team and is knowledgeable when to direct questions to the supervisor or pathologist. Well-developed interpersonal, communication and documentation skills. Models behaviour to align with our policies and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
