Job Description

Overview

The Mechatronics Engineer provides technical support for the Mechanical & Mechatronics Engineering department with primary responsibility for the undergraduate Mechatronics Engineering students.

Responsibilities

Provide technical support for the Mechatronics courses

  • Supervise, instruct, and mentor students
  • Create, develop and lead labs, demonstrations, and workshops
  • Design and construct electro-mechanical systems for labs and class use
  • Create and develop embedded software and hardware systems for labs and class use
  • Develop written instructions and manuals for students
  • Maintain safety standards
  • Maintain equipment inventory
  • Maintain and update undergraduate lab spaces
  • Provide supervision of undergraduate lab spaces
Support undergraduate projects
  • Supervise, instruct, and assist students
  • Develop and operate design competitions for departmental symposia
  • Maintain safety standards
Keep pace with technology and program requirements
  • Be flexibly responsive to changing teaching needs
  • Maintain training levels to be current with subject matter
  • Regularly review teaching labs to ensure topics are current
Other duties
  • Resolve lab related issues
  • Participate in committees, such as the curriculum committee
  • Act as technical consultants for projects and committees as required
  • Supervise co-op students working with the Engineering Teaching Staff team
Qualifications
  • A degree in mechatronics engineering or similar engineering program is required.
  • Must be eligible to register as Professional Engineer or Engineer in Training in a Canadian jurisdiction.
  • Several years of relevant experience is required.
  • Must have operational experience in the areas listed below.
  • A strong aptitude for mechatronics technologies and systems is essential. Must have good knowledge in many of the following areas:
  • Multidisciplinary design of consumer or industrial products
  • Embedded software systems (C, C++) and workflows (IDEs, git)
  • Robotics and control systems
  • Electronics lab skills (power supplies, oscilloscopes, multimeters, function generators, through-hole and surface-mount soldering techniques)
  • Engineering tools (e.g., Labview, MatLab, PLC programming)
  • Board-level analog and digital embedded circuits and power systems design
  • Computer aided design and solid modelling
  • Product design cycles
  • Product sourcing
  • Electro-mechanical systems
  • Hydraulic, pneumatic, and electric control systems
  • Mechanical testing equipment
  • Data acquisition, monitoring, and control systems
  • Systems maintenance and calibration
  • Safety standards and procedures (e.g. CSA)
