Position Purpose:
Design, develop, and implement mechatronic systems integrating mechanical, electrical, and control components to meet custom project objectives.
Work with software architecture and programming to the IEC 61131-3 standard using structured text language.
Collaborate with the Engineering, Manufacturing, and Quality Assurance teams to deliver reliable, scalable, and efficient PLC based automation and control solutions.
This position works with the Engineering, Manufacturing and Quality Assurance teams to get the entire unit to the customer on time and on budget.
Mechatronics Engineer Duties and Responsibilities:
Contribute to the team to execute design, integration, and commissioning of mechatronic systems involving mechanical structures, sensors, actuators, and PLC control systems.
Develop and maintain control logic, wiring diagrams, and functional specifications for automated and semi-automated systems.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams to translate project requirements into robust engineering solutions and control strategies.
Develop and validate PLC and HMI programs ensuring safety, reliability, and compliance with applicable standards in IEC 61131-3 compliant code.
Support field commissioning of microwave based machinery, including PLC, HMI, motor control, valves, sensors, safety and cleaning systems.
Troubleshoot and optimize system performance during testing, production and field commissioning to ensure timely resolution of technical issues.
Design electrical and electronic systems, harness routings, and control cabinets using SolidWorks Electrical.
Support the design and maintenance of SOPs and engineering documentation for new and existing equipment.
Review and approve electrical and mechanical designs for manufacturability, maintainability, and regulatory compliance.
Contribute to project planning and scheduling; provide accurate estimates of effort, materials, and timelines.
Communicate clearly with Management regarding project scope, progress, and potential risks or schedule impacts.
Exhibit the flexibility in taking on tasks that are not generally listed above in order to meet project deadlines.
Participate in design reviews, risk assessments, and lessons-learned sessions to improve future project outcomes.
Qualifications:
Education:Bachelor's degree in Mechatronics, Electrical, Automation or Mechanical Engineering (with strong controls background).
Certification:P.Eng. designation (or eligibility for registration) with Engineers and Geoscientists BC.
Class 5 clean driver's license with access to a vehicle.
Experience:Minimum 3 years of experience in mechatronics, automation, or industrial control systems.
Demonstrated experience with PLC programming and integration with IEC 61131-3 compliant code.
Proficiency with SolidWorks 3D CAD and electrical design tools.
Experience in programming HMI (Intermediate level) is required.
PLC programming experience with Twin CAT III is an asset.
Experience in Allen-Bradley or Beckhoff Automation is an asset.
Experience with set up and query editing of SQL server is required.
Experience using version control/repository software (intermediate level) is an asset.
Understanding manufacturing processes and CNC technology (lathe, mill, router, etc.).
Skills and Abilities:Strong interdisciplinary understanding of mechanical, electrical, and control systems.
Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and debugging skills.
Proactive and organized, with a commitment to continuous improvement and innovation.
Ability to read, interpret and draw electrical schematics (intermediate level).
Strong verbal and written English communication skills with colleagues regarding the understanding of PLC, HMI, Servo, Industrial Communication Network and VFD related topics.
Professional etiquette (both written and verbal) with co-workers, vendors and customers.
Strong ability to manage time and multiple priorities to achieve high-quality deliverables and avoid bottlenecks.
Ability to see the big picture while not losing focus of the small details.
Working as part of a team with minimum supervision.
