Established in 1859, the Department of Chemistry is one of the leading institutions of its kind in Canada - featuring teaching excellence, advanced research facilities and development of distinguished scientists in the past and for the future. Our department has a wide variety of services including chemical stores, NMR lab, X-ray analysis lab and a mass spectrometry lab. These resources, combined with our ambition and excitement, create an ideal place to work, research and make an impact in scientific education.

Working in the Machine Shop, under the direction of the Manager, Mechatronic Services,the incumbent determines the technical requirement for the fabrication/machining projects, conducts fabrications activities, contributes to workshop/lab operations, and provides safety training, ensure adherence to safety procedures and standards.

This is a 6 months term position with possibility of renewal.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Determining technical requirements for fabrication projects; Designing, modifying and fabricating custom machine parts.
  • Creating and technical drawing sets for manufacturing. Creating and reviewing CAM programs and tool paths for manufacturing. Creating complex CAD (Solid Modeling) designs using programs such as Solidworks, Inventor, and/or Siemens NX.
  • Implementing plans and process improvements for lab/workshop activities
  • Preparing, assembling and setting-up material, equipment and supplies according to the needs of the facility
  • Coordinating routine maintenance of equipment
  • Analyzing and recommending options for project design; analyzing and recommending suitable materials and methods of approaching fabrication and/or lab work; and collaborating on cost estimates
  • Providing safety training to students and employees, and ensuring adherence to safety procedures and standards
  • Providing orientation to others on lab equipment, working procedures and practices
Essential Qualifications:
  • College Diploma (2 years) or acceptable combination of equivalent experience, and Certification of Qualification as a General Machinist or Tool and Die Maker.
  • Minimum five years of recent and related experience determining the technical requirement for fabrication and machining projects.
  • Experience analyzing technical specifications in preparation for production, and collaborating on cost estimates.
  • Extensive experience creating complex CAD designs, and creating and reviewing CAM programs.
  • Experience using CAM programs and Mastercam software.
  • Experience providingsafety training.
  • Excellent skills with Solidworks, Inventor, and/or Siemens NX, or other solid modelling software.
  • Ability to create and review CAM programs and tool paths for manufacturing.
  • The job requires a very high level of muscular coordination and/or manual dexterity to execute very precise and synchronized movement.
Assets (Nonessential):
  • Experience with TIG welding with stainless steel.
  • Experience with vacuum technology.
  • Experience working routinely on small sized parts.
