One of our clients is looking for a Systems Specialist
Length: Contract term is 18 months, with possibility of extensions
Location: Toronto, ON

JOB FUNCTION:
Provide system support during the production life cycle of information technology systems by establishing user requirements, system design, integration of commercial products, software development, enhancements, troubleshooting, preparing procedures, consulting, training and researching commercial products.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Develop standards, participate in the development of strategic plans and provide operational and design specifications for client\'s managed systems.

2. Provide systems design expertise to support the development of computer-based information systems/tools to meet the needs of customers by establishing user requirements, developing system designs, integrating commercial products, code software and test systems. Provide project management support to design projects/teams or information systems or tools.

3. Design, build, and operate hosting systems which includes server and network components to deliver required system functions.

4. Manage the evolution of existing hosting systems and tools by implementing enhancements to provide additional functionality, correct problems to improve reliability, maintainability, improve server management capabilities, and respond to advanced system problems or failures to restore system functionality.

5. Perform server management duties, prepare procedures and/or support personnel involved in server management activities.

6. Research commercial products and tools which can be used in the design or support of information systems and tools and perform ongoing assessments of their ability to meet current and future requirements.

7. Provide systems consulting support to operations, maintenance or software development staff.
8. Develop procedures required for the secure operation and management of information systems or tools. Perform hosting attestation to ensure compliance to set standards, meeting requirements, and identification of improvement opportunities.

9. Act as a consultant or mentor to peers to advance their learning and facilitate their problem-solving skills with their respective areas of expertise.

10. Perform other duties as required.

EDUCATION:
Requires a knowledge of server management, Unix, Windows, infrastructure monitoring tools, computer science subjects and disciplines in order to design, develop and support small to large scale computer systems and networks. Specific knowledge would include system design, networking and system administration. Requires a knowledge of technical writing to prepare effective reports.

EXPERIENCE:
Requires considerable experience in the design, development and support of computer systems. This experience will be gained through work in the following areas:
(a) computer system architecture, design and integration
(b) system networking
(c) administration and use of standard or proprietary computer operating systems
(d) development of computer applications using standard development languages
(e) support of small to large scale computer systems
(f) database design and administration.

DIFFICULTY OF SOLUTION OF WORK PROBLEMS:
Problems may occur in attempting to develop solutions to system design problems where the causes and effects of such problems are difficult to assess and are normally beyond the scope of past practice or precedent because of the complex nature of the system. Requires application of theoretical knowledge, mathematical techniques and experimental approaches to devise, to develop and to test new methods of approach and alternative solutions, work techniques and standards to overcome or to alleviate the problems.

A period of up to eight years is considered necessary to gain this experience.

This knowledge is considered to be normally acquired either through the successful completion of a four-year university education in the appropriate discipline, or by having the equivalent level of education.

REQUIREMENT FOR INDEPENDENT ACTION:
Work assignments are received from the Supervisor with general discussion on the work to be performed. Specific actions are self-initiated and discussed with the Supervisor. Requires devising methods of approach, investigating new ideas, collaborating with others in other business units, or outside organizations, assessing results and preparing remedial recommendations. Unusual problems and relatively important matters are referred to the Supervisor for direction. Periodic progress and quality checks are maintained to keep the Supervisor informed of project status and progress, as well as through the submission of proposals, conclusions and recommendations.

INTERNAL CONTACTS:
Requires working with others to coordinate own activities, to explain system changes/additions and to provide technical and economic advice and guidance. Contacts involve working with others in the solution of mutual or overlapping work or problems, not usually of a controversial nature.

EXTERNAL CONTACTS:
Requires contact with a variety of external parties to discuss/to develop mutually satisfactory solutions and recommendations on equipment and/or coordinated system design and operation and/or to solve problems not usually of a controversial nature.

RESPONSIBILITY FOR ACCURACY - EFFECT OF ERRORS:
Technical and judgmental errors in the performance of duties could escape detection and affect conclusions and recommendations. Such errors could result in considerable loss of time and effort to other groups and considerable expenditure for correction. Errors in working with other resource groups could impact on the credibility of services provided by the unit and could result in adverse relations.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Requires working in a normal business office environment.
