Duties

The successful candidate will assist the Heat Division (such as the Senior Science Advisor) with projects to translate scientific understanding to practically address how to protect the health of Canadians from extreme heat. In particular, the student will support the Health Canada’s Extreme Heat Program with the following tasks:

• Conduct literature scans/reviews;
• Review documents from stakeholders and provide technical comments;
• Author plain language evidence-based synthesis documents and memos with practical

recommendations for local and regional health authorities and Health Canada’s
management; and/or

• Conduct ad hoc tasks for the Heat Division to protect the health of Canadians from extreme heat.

Colleagues within the Climate Change and Innovation Bureau with many years of expertise in extreme heat are committed to collaborating with you and sharing their input, advice and expertise.

Work environment

Extreme heat events are posing a growing public health risk in Canada. Climate change can mean longer and more intense heat waves that can be dangerous for the health of Canadians. Health Canada’s Heat Program aims to protect the health of Canadians from extreme heat.

Health Canada’s Heat Program, within the Climate Change and Innovation Bureau at Health Canada, works to address the health impacts of extreme heat. It does so through developing and disseminating public health promotion communications and advice; providing expert advice and publishing guidance materials for health authorities and health professionals; and, working with Environment and Climate Change Canada and provincial, territorial, and local health authorities to support the implementation of Heat Alert and Response Systems (HARS). We are a passionate and dedicated group with diverse professional backgrounds including environmental health science, public health, urban planning and epidemiology.

The Student must be currently enrolled in a Masters Program in a recognized postsecondary academic institution with full-time status in one of the following specializations: human kinetics, public health, environmental health and epidemiology. Degree equivalency

• Experience in analysing and reviewing scientific data, literature and information.

• In the context of student recruitment in the Federal Public Service, the experience can be acquired through the studies, work experience, or volunteer activities.
