Job Description


The Mariners in Training Camp Lead is responsible for the provision and leadership of high-quality sport and general day camp experiences for Mariners Multisport camps and supporting Mariners in Training camps.The Lead will be required to create weekly age-appropriate program plans, in accordance with Mariners in Training programming standards. The Lead is the role model for our campers, Assistant Instructors, and externally contracted activity leads, and should be well prepared to instruct and mentor a wide variety of campers.Duties:

  • Lead and supervise the implementation of pre-made camp curriculum adapting as needed in response to changes, such as in facilities, camper behavior, camp group dynamics, and volunteer availability.
  • Maintain a high level of professionalism during interactions with administrative staff, instructors, volunteers, parents, and campers.
  • Participate in weekly staff meetings, bi-weekly one-on-one meetings and mid-summer feedback session with camp administrators.
  • Supervise lunchtime rotations including but not limited to lunchroom and activity periods.
  • Supervise and participate in all camp and recreational activities including recreation games, sports, aquatics and hiking.
  • Create a safe and inclusive experience for all participants.
  • Oversee, manage, and document camper behavior, as well as report any behavioral, or first aid incidents or concerns to the administrative team. Fill out paperwork as needed.
  • Create weekly camper report cards.
  • Provide mentorship to assistant instructors and volunteers through encouragement, debriefs, and opportunities for goal development.
  • Follow all current Provincial Health & Safety Service Guidelines, as well as Mariners in Training and Vancouver Island University safety protocols and policy.
Required Qualifications:
  • Education or career experience relevant to sport, education, recreation, community and/or youth
  • Standard First Aid
  • 2-4 years summer camp or recreation leader experience
  • Knowledge of and confidence leading a variety of sports, games and activities in a summer camp setting
  • Knowledge and experience building relationships with patrons and dealing with behavior management with both children and parents/adults
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent customer service, public relations and leadership skills
  • Independent decision-making, problem solving and analytical skills
  • Experience working in a team and enjoying working with youth
  • A high level of creativity, flexibility and energy
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs
  • Satisfactory Criminal Record
