Job Description

Duties and Responsibilities:




The technologist provides technical support for the department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering. Reporting to the Supervisor - Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering, the incumbent provides specialised technical assistance and advice to students, faculty, staff, and external clients, on choice of material and production methods. The incumbent advises and instructs users of the facilities to ensure proper and safe operation of conventional and CNC machine shop equipment including but not necessarily limited to mills, lathes, and various CNC machines, laser, and water cutting equipment as well as 3D printing technologies. The incumbent assists in the selection, installation, and maintenance of above mentioned equipment as well as stock keeping; allocating materials, tools and equipment to the users of the laboratories. The technologist performs all tasks required in the development, design, fabrication, repair, and installation of teaching and research equipment. During peak busy periods or when working remotely from supervision, the incumbent will, based on guidelines established by the Supervisor - Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering, independently support faculty, staff and teaching assistants.

Qualifications:




The incumbent must possess the following qualifications:

The incumbent must possess sound technical and "people" skills. The incumbent must be technically proficient in mechanical systems technology, machine shop practices, NC machining and programming, 3D printing approaches in the field of mechanical and aerospace. The work also requires strong interpersonal skills. Guiding students and providing realistic and practical advice to them, as well as faculty and to off-campus clients. The position requires sensitivity, empathy as well as good verbal, written, and graphical communication skills. Should have current first aid training, training in the transportation of dangerous goods and WHMIS training.

Education and Experience:




The above is normally acquired through the completion of:

Graduation from a three year mechanical engineering technology or metal machining technology program from a recognized institute of technology or an accredited equivalent. Certification as an OACETT Applied Science Technologist (A.Sc.T.) or Certified Engineering Technologist (C.E.T.). Five years related experience including CNC programming, rapid prototyping machine technologies.
