Position Overview:

The Manufacturing Engineer - Tube Forming & Fabrication Process is responsible for leading our company's tube forming processes. The Engineer will be responsible for managing tube bending programs from cradle to grave, providing technical expertise and guidance on tube bending and process and equipment issues and improvement initiatives to ensure that systems and processes are in place to meet Active Exhaust's quality and production objectives safely and efficiently.

This position will report to the Director of Manufacturing Engineering.

What you will be doing:

Duties and Responsibilities: New Programs and New or Upgraded Equipment Installation

  • Lead and execute tube bending and forming equipment and process from quotation phase to equipment installation for new programs and/or change to existing programs due to engineering changes
  • Lead and participate in cross-functional meetings to provide input in DFM and GDT analysis, PFMEA, control plans, process capability studies, DOE's, poka-yoke, and error-proof plans
  • Manage equipment and tooling suppliers and monitor progress through quotation, design, build, and installation stages of all new equipment necessary for new programs and improvements or retrofits on current processes and equipment
  • Coordinate all equipment sample runs at supplier and in-house and ensure a successful run at rate milestone based on TAKT time and customer requirements
  • Use AEC standard Design Review and Sign Off Checklist to record open issues and follow up for successful closure
  • Evaluate equipment trial runs and buy-offs for new equipment and retrofits and ensure run and rate and essential safety regulations are met per AEC, OHSA, ESA, and CSA standards.
  • Conduct training for associates on new equipment and processes, monitor their progress and ensure timely and effective handover using AEC standard Machine Handover Checklist
  • Establish machine process parameters for all new programs and continuously monitor to improve and optimize
  • Prepare, release, maintain and update standardized work instructions, troubleshooting guide(s) for equipment
Duties and Responsibilities: Current Programs and Continuous Improvement
  • Provide technical expertise and support to production to resolve process capability or quality issues
  • Previous knowledge of tube bending simulation or ready to be trained on tube bending simulation programming
  • Investigate & execute ideas to increase material utilization & capacity utilization on the CNC benders
  • Provide and apply tube bending process knowledge to identify production constraints and work with the team to identify and implement solutions
  • Collaborate closely with the fabrication team to improve OEE to meet AEC standards
  • Assist in troubleshooting tube bending machines downtime issues
  • Prepare setup & changeover instructions. Provide training to the operators.
  • Ensure departmental operating policies and procedures are well-defined, documented, and integrated into the processes and meet internal control guidelines
  • Support the implementation of best practices for the departments and the development, monitoring, and application of KPIs (productivity, cost, quality)
  • Work directly with cross-functional team to understand and develop solutions for customer issues and problems
  • Lead cross-functional team in the development of continuous improvement activities of existing and new products within the organization
  • Participate in strategic discussions for product road map development for new processes
  • Participate in cross-functional design reviews and feasibility analysis
  • Some travel may be required
  • Other duties as required
What you bring along:
  • Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering
  • P. Eng. designation from PEO desirable
  • Lean Six Sigma Black Belt or Green Belt is desirable
  • Project management experience; PMP designation desirable
  • 10+ years' relevant experience in tube bending/fabrication environment.
  • CNC bending knowledge is a strong asset
  • Excellent understanding of the steel characteristic, particularly with expertise in large diameter tube bending processes (3" and above)
  • Any previous experience with rotary draw tube bending is a strong asset
  • Competent decision-making, problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Intermediate to expert level GDT knowledge and application experience in reviewing stack-ups and assembly of various components in an assembly
  • Excellent documentation, organizational and time management skills
  • Expert in 3D CAD Modelling (solid works), computer skills, and drafting experience (AutoCAD, Microsoft Office, Outlook)
  • Able to work in a fast-paced environment
  • Self-motivated and able to work with minimum supervision
  • Excellent English language and communication skills (both verbal and written)
  • Basic understanding of WHMIS, IMDS, Ergonomics, Healthy and Safety regulations
  • Able to accept directions and change directions as required
  • Able to work under extreme demands and tight schedules
  • Support of maintenance and engineering activities on assigned work centers and programs
  • Previous working experience in a similar function, ideally within the steel industry with a solid understanding of steel indicators, competitors, and emerging technologies
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
