Job Description



Summary: Develops, implements and maintains methods, operation sequence and processes in the manufacture or fabrication of parts, components, sub‑assemblies and final assemblies. Interfaces with design engineering in coordinating the release of new products. Estimates manufacturing cost, determines time standards, and makes recommendations for tooling and process requirements of new or existing product lines. Maintains records and reporting systems for coordination of manufacturing operations.

VIAVI Solutions is looking for a Manufacturing Engineer (Mechanical) to provide leadership in and individual contributions to our NPI projects, product quality and process excellence.
Reporting to the Senior Manager of Operations Engineering, this position will support activities in our Fiber Optic product group based in Ottawa, Ontario and will work extensively with our external 3rd party partners as well as the local R&D group.
The person in this role will directly influence VIAVI’s success through their ability to execute on NPI projects and ongoing product/process improvement using process/data-driven approaches that result in successful product releases and ongoing continuous improvement.
Responsibilities for Manufacturing Engineer, Mechanical

  • Participate in and/or lead technical teams as required
  • Lead and participate in New Product Introduction (NPI) projects.
  • Evaluate new components/parts and process changes to ensure fit for purpose in factory.
  • Evaluate Product Quality data (Annual Failure Rate, Initial Delivery Error, Manufacturing Yield, etc.) to identify opportunities for improved product quality and cost reduction
    • Lead or participate yield improvement activities to improve process and products.
    • Lead cost improvement activities to improve profitability of the product portfolio.
  • Evaluate process data to identify process timing, utilization, and efficiency
  • Help refine, specify, and communicate expectations for quality outcomes through the review and improvement of quality specifications and work instructions
  • This position may require up to 20% international travel

Pre-Requisites / Skills / Experience Requirements:
Qualifications for Sustaining Engineer, Mechanical
  • BS degree in Mechanical, Manufacturing, or Material Sciences Engineering
  • 5+ years’ experience in a technology driven industry (ideally optical or electro-mechanical products).
  • Experience driving product and process cost reduction activities
  • Knowledge of CAD or CAM software
  • Experience in analyzing process & quality data
  • Good communication skills and experience in team-based environment.
  • Internal and remote contract manufacturing (CM) support experience
  • Ability to work independently and demonstrated track record of delivering results in a dynamic technical environment
