Your role:

As a manager of Talent & Labour Contracting for Business & Rights, InHouse Production you will be responsible for overseeing the planning, execution and management of personal services contracts for all genres of Inhouse production. You will provide strategic direction to English media and support departments on how to engage personal services, including the application of collective agreement terms for employment and freelance services. You will draft personal services contracts and negotiate terms with those who provide those services. You will be responsible for identifying, developing and executing deal structures for CBC programming, including the creation of related strategies that enable CBC to increase reach, maximize revenue, and establish and maintain primacy and relevance in the broadcasting industry.

Other responsibilities of this role include:

Provide leadership and direction to internal partners across the corporation on complex rights, financial, policy, business and regulatory matters.

Develop and negotiate deal structures for inhouse content.

Negotiate deals with freelancers and contract employees to ensure compliance with CBC strategic objectives, collective agreements, internal policies, and legal and regulatory obligations.

Manage and coordinate the activities of Talent & Labour Contracting staff, including hiring, firing, training and discipline. Delegate and assign activities to staff.

Participate in the development of objectives and strategies for the department, including training and development of employees, and of constructive feedback and evaluation in furtherance of individual and corporate strategic objectives.

Monitor and give guidance regarding negotiating, preparing and administering freelance and employee personal services contracts and various types of InHouse production and licensing agreements and ensure that the contracts are prepared and administered in the most consistent, appropriate and effective manner. Communicate and enforce policies and practices

Provide constructive direction, feedback and evaluation to ensure that relationships with third parties and contract employees meet CBC strategic objectives, business and programming standards.

Under the direction of the Senior Director, formulate strategies for CBC's negotiations with the ACTRA Performers Guild, the Writers Guild of Canada, the Canadian Federation of Musicians and the Canadian Media Guild freelancers. Participate as a management team member in those negotiations.

Ensure timely and reliable financial and rights reporting, provide guidance and advice to all management and production levels.

Recommend and implement changes relating to business practices in InHouse programming in response to the rapidly changing digital landscape.

Identify and seek out opportunities to pro-actively partner with internal partners to gain efficiencies, foster communication, and ensure efforts are coordinated to carry out business in concert with policies and with best business practices.

Qualifications

Your profile:

At least five (5) years of business and/or operational experience, including knowledge of the broadcast industry, radio and/or television production, and industry union agreements (eg. ACTRA, WGC, CFM).

A minimum of five (5) years relevant experience in drafting and negotiating major contracts.

A law degree is an asset.

Knowledge of all emerging forms of content distribution including television, over the top digital services, mobile, original digital media production, negotiating techniques, contract law, and corporate business practices.

Ability to do extensive problem solving and devising creative solutions to problems.

Ability to make quick decisions during negotiations that have complex logistical, legal and financial implications

Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.

Superior organizational skills.

Strong problem-solving, negotiating skills and the ability to maintain and develop productive business relationships as well as a willingness to try new projects and be somewhat of a risk-taker are necessary.

Excellent leadership and managerial skills in effective team building and staff development.

Ability to handle multiple priorities and respond to several urgent demands in a short space of time.

Ability to exercise judgment and work independently taking initiative; concentration required to focus on tasks before deciding how to proceed.
