We are seeking an experienced transportation and logistics professional to join our team as the Manager, Rail Operations. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing all aspects of Viterra\xe2\x80\x99s rail transportation including freight bookings, railcar programming, and operational execution to ensure sales commitments are met while maximizing pipeline efficiencies and Viterra assets. This position manages key relationships with country operations, Canadian and US railways, and end destinations to maximize efficiencies.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manages rail operations team ensuring all billing and industry timelines are met.
  • Manages the weekly car allocation process within internal and industry policies and regulations.
  • Ensures Viterra\xe2\x80\x99s transportation execution aligns with projected sales, in collaboration with Grain Merchandisers and Rail Logistics.
  • Negotiates railcar programming with railways ensuring maximum potential of railcar orders by facility and destination.
  • Participates in the negotiations and execution of annual freight contracts.
  • Communicates specific country and terminal elevator service requirements (basis sales commitments) to the respective railroad and resolves all rail related service complaints in a timely manner.
  • Manages the loading of railcars to ensure commodities loaded match the sales demand. This includes real time changing of orders internally to ensure seamless communication is in place with all internal and external parties.
  • Manages movement of all Viterra private railcars for processing facilities.
  • Oversees all investigations into railway problem shipments, demurrage charges, and disputes.
  • Manages staff within company policy and provides for effective staff development within guidelines and the performance management system.
  • Prepares and maintains shipping statistics on volumes, railway performance and overall supply chain metrics.
The ideal candidate will possess:
  • A University degree in Agriculture, Commerce or Business Administration (or an equivalent post-secondary education).
  • Minimum of eight (8) years\xe2\x80\x99 experience in grain transportation and inventory management.
  • Excellent risk assessment skills with the ability to exercise sound judgment in decision making.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain effective work relationships with internal and external customers, colleagues, and agencies.
  • Familiarity with industry regulations and policies.
Equivalent combinations of education and experience that result in the required level of knowledge skill and competence will be considered.
