Position Overview

The Faculty of Veterinary Medidine invites applications for a Manager, One Health. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

A One Health approach, as defined by the World Health Organization (WHO), is one in which multiple sectors communicate and work together to achieve better public health outcomes. This approach is particularly relevant to the control of zoonoses, combating antimicrobial resistance, and a wide variety of other health issues that have determinants spanning across multiple sectors.

The new One Health at UCalgary (OH@UC) at the University of Calgary will be based within the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, and will serve as a One Health hub for University-wide research that employs a One Health lens. It will function as a multi-university, transdisciplinary, and inter-sectoral research and policy centre aimed at leveraging resources and expertise across different areas to work together to address challenges in the health of humans, animals, and the environment, under a One Health banner. The OH@UC will serve as a strategic link between the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and other UofC Faculties such as the Cumming School of Medicine, including the Ward of the 21st Century (W21C) research and innovation initiative.

Reporting to the Scientific Director, OH@UC, the Manager will serve a senior role in the continued creation and establishment of the OH@UC, and in program development and implementation. The incumbent will be a key liaison with other academic, funding, and implementation partners (federal and provincial government, industry, health and agricultural sectors, veterinarians and physicians) with varying backgrounds, expertise and expectations.

This is a maternity leave replacement position.

Position Description

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Program Management:
  • In consultation with the Scientific Director and other key stakeholders, determine overall objectives for the OH@UC and lead the development of vision/mission/priorities that will serve to align research projects and program area development
  • Develop policies, protocols, and procedures for the day to day operations of the OH@UC
  • In collaboration with respective leads, assist with the strategic planning process and ensuring implementation of research plans
  • Collaborate with world class medical professionals, internationally known physician-scientists and veterinarians, federal and provincial government, industry and other stakeholders to ensure alignment between research programs
  • Liaise across with research program leads to develop a cross-provincial communication strategy to facilitate off-site collaboration and knowledge sharing
  • Liaise with research program leads to integrate programmes within the OH@UC
  • Act as a liaison between the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, other institutional Faculties and departments, groups such as Cumming School of Medicine, Faculty of Science, W21C, ACWA, etc.
  • Clarify stakeholder roles and develop relationships with stakeholders that foster long term engagement
  • Staff Management:
  • Oversee a core team of direct reports-to administrative and/or research staff to support research program areas
  • Liaise with a team of Managers/Administrators related to their accountabilities
  • Provide project-specific supervision of activities, as required
  • Manage routine, sensitive, and complex human resource issues and requirements
  • Empower reports-to staff to grow and execute deliverables as part of their career trajectories
  • Accountable for the performance management and professional development of 2 or more direct reports
  • Develop HR plans to ensure that program area leads can meet objectives, and adapt plans and priorities to meet research and operational challenges
  • Budget Management:
  • Provide guidance in preparing detailed budgets and justifications for funding applications to leverage the work of the research program leads
  • Direct and manage multifaceted, complicated budgets, and operations and measurement reporting requirements
  • Monitor spending of comprehensive research financial budgets for the OH@UC for both short-term and long-term planning purposes
  • Review, present, and justify budget requests to research services and administration as needed
Qualifications / Requirements:
  • DVM, MD, or equivalent degree in health-related field is required
  • Graduate degree in public health, veterinary medicine, or health-related discipline is ideal
  • Minimum of five years of progressively responsible management experience in a related field, Alberta experience is an asset
  • Familiarity with and/or experience in the health or agricultural sectors, government, post-secondary (University of Calgary is an asset), industry, and health sector stakeholders, preferably in the context of antimicrobial resistance
  • Knowledge of financial systems and controls (federal, provincial and local), budget management, and project management according to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) framework
  • Ability to work independently, confidentially, and to accept responsibility for complex and sensitive decision-making
  • High degree of analytic ability to manage the financial and human resources aspects of the position
  • Current knowledge of laws and regulations pertaining to research administration
  • Ability to interpret, analyse and disseminate critical information to stakeholders
  • Strategic, global thinker with a deep commitment to promoting positive impact through research and policy, and the ability to influence, inspire confidence, build consensus and work successfully with varied audiences
  • Previous experience and demonstrated successes in building coalition or alliances of partners and developing robust multi-disciplinary collaborations
