The Advanced Clinical Simulation Technician (ACST) reports to the Manager, Clinical Teaching Team. This role will be the primary person supporting simulation-based medical education. This role ensures the production and maintenance of high-quality simulation materials. The ACST partners with course coordinators, faculty, and the clinical teaching team to coordinate simulation events, operate technical equipment, manage clinical resources for teaching purposes, and offers guidance and assistance to students utilizing the practice lab for skill development. Under faculty guidance, the ACST contributes to the development, maintenance, and operation of veterinary-specific simulation models and simulators, ensuring alignment with curriculum requirements. The ACST takes a strategic approach by auditing the curriculum to identify opportunities to replace live animal use with simulators and/or cadavers, supporting the evaluation of alternatives and their integration into the new curriculum.
Flexibility in work hours is essential to ensure availability of support for students in the practice lab, including some evenings and weekends.
This physically demanding role may involve heavy lifting and prolonged standing (Physical Demands Analysis available).
Summary of Key Responsibilities
(job functions include but are not limited to):
Simulator Development and Maintenance
Collaborate with faculty and content experts to design and refine simulation models that enhance veterinary teaching
Ensure simulators are maintained and prepared for teaching sessions, troubleshooting any issues, and coordinating repairs as needed
Support innovation in simulation-based veterinary education by developing and implementing new models and technologies
Provide mentorship and training to other technicians and assist in the planning and execution of simulation-based teaching events, if required
Oversees the daily operations of simulation spaces, troubleshooting technical issues and ensuring smooth, efficient execution of events involving simulators
If required for simulator production, coordinates the use and maintenance of cadaveric material, aligning usage with accreditation standards and University policies
Manages a cost-effective inventory of simulation and clinical resources, requisitioning supplies as needed and conducting regular inventory checks
Managing or tracking maintenance schedules for all simulator equipment, ensuring preventative maintenance is scheduled to minimize equipment downtime
Assists in evaluating simulation educational proposals, ensuring all documentation, resources, and standards are met before initiating projects
Contribute to the development of technical documents, manuals, and protocols for simulation equipment and lab procedures, utilizing technical writing skills to ensure accuracy and clarity
Develops and maintains instructional resources, including creating video tutorials to support effective use of simulation tools
Resource Management
Conducts audits of the current curriculum to assess the use of live animals, identifying opportunities where simulators and/or cadavers can be implemented as alternatives
Collaborates with the anatomy lead to evaluate and select appropriate replacements for live animal use in teaching
Contributes to the strategic planning and integration of simulation-based tools into the curriculum, particularly in the development of the new curriculum
Supports the organization and oversight of inventory used in practical teaching
Practice Lab Coordination
Oversee the daily operations of the practice lab, ensuring it is maintained as a functional, safe, and resource-equipped learning environment
Coordinate and manage the practice lab schedule, ensuring adequate and equitable bookable access for all students, including evening and weekend availability
Provide direct support and guidance to students during practice lab sessions, assisting with equipment use, simulation setup, and troubleshooting technical issues as needed
Collaborate with faculty to align simulation activities with course objectives and program outcomes
Maintain practice lab equipment and inventory, ensuring proper maintenance, promptly reporting issues, and coordinating timely resolution through repairs or technical support
Qualifications / Requirements:
Five years of experience in Simulation Based Veterinary, Medical or any other health domain required, along with proficiency in operating, troubleshooting, and maintaining simulation equipment and software
Higher education by way of an undergraduate degree or master's also considered a strong asset
Thorough understanding of health, safety, and compliance standards related to laboratory and simulation environments, including sterilization, decontamination, and proper handling of materials
Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills for coordinating with faculty, students, and other stakeholders
Ability to manage multiple tasks independently, demonstrating sound judgment and problem-solving skills
Demonstrated ability to train and mentor staff and students, fostering a collaborative and educational environment
Strong technical writing skills for creating and updating procedural documentation, manuals, and training resources
Experience managing and tracking inventory in a laboratory or clinical setting, ensuring the availability of supplies for teaching and simulation sessions
Ability to lift and transport materials up to 60 lbs and work standing for long periods which are physical demands are consistent with an active clinical environment. (Physical Demands Analysis Available)
